No
thinkin of buying this but not heard many good things about it. for example:

* High ISO performance worse than 40D
* Per-pixel detail not as good as on good 10 or 12 megapixel cameras
* High-end lenses required to get the most out of the camera
* Poor white balance performance under artificial light
* Reduced dynamic range in the shadow areas compared to EOS 40D
* Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light)
* Live view not as accurate as on 40D (framing very slightly off-center, in contrast detect AF mode not possible to magnify right out to the extreme corners)

the above is just off one site, but surely the top 4 are pretty big faults.

I have on and it a great camera you need to lean how to use it to get the beat out of it
Also there is one or two setting that you need to change as the default ones are not the best as far as noise goes
As far as high end lens I think this is true of any top end camera.
No WLB for me
as for live view not something I use much its not the way I like to use a camera after all its a dSLR.

i've just had a look at some sample picts against the 450D...is it me or are the pictures alot sharper on the 450D?

Was the same lens used?
Unless I am mistake there are micro-settings on the 50D for the lens set up.

Interesting website but I can't see any mention of the lenses used or the camera settings.
It would be more helpful if they published this information.
Looking at your camerabag, I would suggest investing in lenses rather than a new body.
They would improve your photos a lot more than just upgrading the body.

all [icts on that site have their exif data still attached. also the reason why i want a new camera is a. i think my cam is too old. B. i kinda messed up the viewfinder on the inside, it now has a few lines when i look through it, also some of the AF dot red lights light up but faintly and blurred.

nothing wrong with my 40D but I wouldn't turn down a 50D in it's place on the face of things.
however, I'd rather spend the money on glass.

Sound like you move the eye dioptics if its blurred

Well get a 40D then, check this out http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=123822 So where to now? choose another camera and look for the negative points

so did you think my photo was sharp? It not a studio shot just a evening with a few friends and grabbed shot
yes it is sharp, but under the right conditions dont most cameras take sharp picts?

hmmm not sure what to do?! might try see if jessops will fix it under the insurance!

Right conditions?
SO your camera is OK then
1 Focused
2 Exposure
3 Held still
What more do you want?

It depends what you want the camera for.The 40D is an excellent camera -probably the best ever produced at that price point by Canon. However, we shot with the 40D and 50D side by side for a while and there was no doubt at all that the 40D was seriously challenged in comparison for wildlife photogaphy, which is hardly surprising with 50% more pixels.

The white balance performance usually refers to automatic WB performance and pretty well all DSLRs whatever the cost, get panned for the same issue. I either set the WB in degs Kelvin for artificial light shots, or use custom white balance.

There's so many disparate views about the 50D and noise performance- I'll just say I don't find it any issue at all, and I regularly shoot at 800 and 1600 ISO.

I'm still trying to decide between a 40D and a 50D myself, the 'secondhand/new' argument is part of my problem.

But for not much more than a new 50D I can pick up a 5D classic, which just throws a big spanner in the works! :p

do they come brand new with no shutter accustions (or what ever u call it)?

also does that price inc delivary?

interesting, problem now is. over the last few hours i've prob looked at a tonne of images comparing them between the 450d, 40d, and the 50d and about 8/10 times i prefer the 450d images.

Yes, brand new and 0 actuations.
I think the delivery with Kerso is £10 for RMSD.
He has plenty of satisfied customers here, just do a search on him.
I am very happy customer and there is no doubt I will buy my bnext body from him as I can't see anyone else in the UK touching his prices.

I loved my 450D and I was more tham happy with it for 14 months.
However, if I had take the above shot with my 450D, I know the IQ of the crop would be a lot lower than it is with my 40D.

Convinced yet?

not really, cos i seen just as good shots taken using 450D. to be honest i think the reason why i want an upgrade is not because i need one but cos i want one. and at the moment lttle negative points about about a camera will put me off. and more importantly if the image quality isnt alot better? is the "want" factor really enough?!

There are plenty of vastly experienced user on this forum who oppinions I value and these are the ones I have learned about the difference in bodies from.
The 40D ****es over the 450D when it comes to noise at high ISO settings for starters.
There are also other features the 40D has that the 450D doesn't have.

Quality glass is the main factor as I've said previously.
With you current lenses I don't think you will see any improvement with a body upgrade.
Spend you money on lenses then upgrade the body.
I don't own any L glass at the moment but with my current lenses, I have no shadow of a doubt that the pictures I take with the 40D are better than the ones I took with the 450D.

to be honest when i looked through the cameras i was concentrating more on the 50d rather than the 40d. and of course the 40d has extra features and am guessing the 50d has alot more. but the way i see things is the 40d is old... why settle for that when i can have a 15mp 50d with a digic 4 processor...but then u hear people say its not really worth gettin the 50d if if u have the 40D.

now where does that leave me?!? i ask myself!

well me 450D is fine (being repaired by jessops at the moment) gonna cost me 700quid for the 50d, or as many have suggested shall i just buy a new lens? been lookin at the CANON Lens EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 II USM. any one have this?

personally i'm lookin for a walkabout lens could this be it? or is there a better one.

Id go for the glass if i were you, as for the 28-105 its not very wide especially on a crop sensor. are you after a walkabout lens?

What is this thread all about? You started by asking if the 50D was a good camera and highlighted all the negatives from the DP review website. People have since posted that it is a good camera, if it meets your requirements.

If you want one, buy it, but please stop this unintelligible posting about lenses, prices and suppliers. :bang:

LOL!

i am very confused at the moment!!! cant decide if i want the 50d? everytime i say yes i want it...i see some really bad picts. which takes me back to the other option people on ere have suggested...buy new glass.

and to Euan yes i would like a suggestion to a good walkabout lens as an alternative to the 50d.

high iso sucked in the FIRST firmware version it is excellent now
AF and AWB algorithms are slightly better on 50 than 40
50 can micro adjust lenses
50 screen is luverly

my 50d is a thousand times better than my 450 was

no offense but if i looked around i could prob find just as good quality picts using the canon 30d or even the 350d. would be nice to see some proper test pictures using same lens.

to be honest when i looked through the cameras i was concentrating more on the 50d rather than the 40d.

The point I was trying to make was your comparison between the 450D, 40D and 50D.
Anyway end of as far as I am concerned.
