yesterday i was out getting some christmas shopping done when i seen a canon 50d in the front window of a cash generator shop.

it was priced at £400.00 and come with a 50mm - 250mm lens im not sure if it was the is version plus a bag and the useual accesories batterys memory card.
the body looked to be in very good condition with no obvious signs of wear and the guy i spoke to said he would find out how many actuations the camera has done for me today

now since ive had my canon 1100d my son has shown a lot of intrest in photography so i was thinking about buying a camera for him to get into the hobby or would the 50d be a bit to advanced for a total newb

now im not afraid of buying second hand gear but my knowledge of the 50d is limited to what i read yesterday evening

so im going back today to have another look and would like to know what other questions i should be asking and is £400.00 a good price providing its all ok

thanks

400 is reasonable, depending on the condition of the camera.

I have one and really like it, it is larger than your 1100D and heavier, so that's a consideration.

The more accessible manual controls and LCD top screen I found really helpful when I have taught a few friends basic camera stuff. I found it a lot easier than looking at the back LCD to display all the settings ect.

So I guess I'd recommend it as a camera to grow into, it's got all the auto modes if that's what your after but the much improved control layout for manual ( over the 1100d style bodies) is the main benefit IMHO

There is a 50D owners threat on here I found helpful it might be worth checking that out, and looking at ebay or places like that at the near ending auctions to see if 400 is a good price considering what's included in the sale?

Hope that helps :D

With the 55-250 lens (which is about £120 second-hand on its own) it is a very good price. I have a 50D I'm planning to sell soon and I'm hoping to get at least £375 for it without any lenses.
