Canon 50mm 1.4 - Noisy AF?

Just had my 50mm f1.4 arrive in the post!

Ive only ever used the following lenses Sigma 10-20, Canon 15-85 and Canon 10-22. From my limited experience does anybody else find the auto focus very noisy on the 50mm unit? Focus speed is average compared to my other lenses but im not sure what is considered fast. Either way the first thing that struck me was the noise of it!

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Congratulations to a great little lens; it's a lot of fun to work with.

I have not really paid much attention to the noise - I use it mainly for my street photography, so don't really hear it anyway.

The AF is, like you say, pretty average; yes. But due to my usage of the lens, I'm often pre-focused anyway so don't notice that either (which is another reason I don't hear it).

My guess is that it's not something you need to worry about.
 
It definitely makes some noise when focusing. It doesn't have a real proper ultrasonic motor, unlike your other lenses hence the difference.

P.S. get a Canon hood for that lens and never take it off. Many of them get damaged by light tapping on the front thread.
 
It shouldn't really be noisy, other than a soft noise of plastic sliding on plastic.

Take it into your camera shop and ask someone nicely if they'll compare an in-store model to yours. Otherwise go into camera shop under the pretense of buying one and test it for comparison.
