Canon 50mm 1.4 with 5DIII for lens correction

Afternoon all,

Just wondering about the Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, and its purple/blue fringing CA when shot near wide open.

With the lens correction parameters loaded onto the Canon 5DmkIII, would this be cancelled out?

I am just considering which to buy, the Sigma 50mm 1.4 or Canon 50mm 1.4, and this could be a strong deciding factor.

FWIW - I also have the 35L and have loaded the lens correction onto my 5DIII, and unfortunately I still get some CA when shot wide open...
Just wondered if the 50mm would be any different?

Can you not get corrections for the Sigma?

Not in camera but I've just looked in CS5 and the Siggy 50mm is there.

Tbh I was hoping for an in-camera solution (if possible, and if it actually fixed the problem). The in-camera lens corrections are only for Canon lenses
I have never really had a lot of success with correcting CA in post - even with the PS profile etc, never really seems to actually do anything other than vigentting/distortion for me!
 
I presume the in camera stuff only works with JPEGs ?

Which PP methods have you tried?
For example, LR3 and LR4 are totally different; LR4 is just a checkbox with no sliders. It's black magic, but seems to do an excellent job on the 24-105.

But I suspect your real problem will be the batch variability that the 50mm f1.4 is notorious for.
I'm lucky to own a good one and it is superb wide open, sharp to the edges and I've never spotted CA that needed correction.
 
LR4 is brilliant for this, and distortion and vignetting too, for loads of lenses of all brands.

Download a free trial, then get the Sigma 50/14. Sorted :)

Not sure what you're doing then, because all those lenses are on the LR database (Canon 35L/1.4 and 50/14, Sigma 50/1.4) and though I don't have those particular lenses to try, I've used it with many others (Canons, Nikons, Tamrons, Sigmas, Tokinas, you name it) and the difference is dramatic. Does the LR distortion and vignetting correction work for you (similarly dramatic)?

I'll post up a comparison tonight between lens profile turned on + 100% crop, and lens profile off + 100% crop.
I have never been able to notice any correction of CA through turning the lens profile on, but it DOES correct/affect vignetting and distortion.

I haven't noticed any fringing with this combination although it's not something I tend to go hunting for. :)

There's a check-box in Camera Raw that removes CA very effectively though.

Canon's DLO with DDP works wonders for this. The trouble is for each photo it's just a pain to import it over.

I hope LR or Photoshop CR supports Canon's DLO soon.
 
Lens corrections examples from LightRoom 4, including getting a rectinlinear corrected shot from a fisheye (edge sharpness is not great though with this much stretch applied).

Yup, that looks about what I'd expect from my 12-24 Siggy at its wide end.
 
As other have said, the latest version of LR4 has a fantastic CA tool. Its not just a tick box, you can set the colour parameters and range for both Purple and green/blue. Its the middle tab if you go in to manual lens correction. Its way ahead of the one tick box in the auto section.

For what its worth it does a fantastic job on problem lenses like the wide open 50mm, as well as the 85mm f/1.8

All true :thumbs:

In the example above of the cathedral and Tokina 10-17mm, the CA correction aplied is simply the auto default after selecting that lens from the pull-down menu.

It could be improved with a bit of custom tweaking as described, and also a bit of sharpening wouldn't go amiss :)
