Got a 550D with 18-55mm is lens, just a quick question why should i buy the Canon prime lens if i already have a 18-55 is lens with the camera?

Easy it's a better lens.

Why would anyone buy a 17-55mm is usm efs lens at £500 when they have a 18-55 already. The answer is image quality, your current lens will not be as good as the 17-55 usm by quite a bit.

Hence why people buy the 50mm as it's a very sharp lens, it's lighter than yours, and crucially has many more f stops which means you can take photos in lower light conditions.

There really are so many threads on here about the 50mm 1.8, you could try the search...

Anyway, in a nutshell:

  1. It's very sharp
  2. Good colour
  3. It's fast, so you can do nice limited depth of field shots with blurry backgrounds
  4. Some will say that using a prime helps make you a better photographer as it makes you think about framing more as you have to frame by moving the camera rather than by twisting a zoom ring
I hope that helps :)

What he said ^^

Much better image quality, wider aperture for more creative DOF, and ability to shot in low light situations, lighter, smaller etc etc

many thanks, yep i should start searching the threads more, thanks for the pointers.
