Canon 50mm f1.4 or 85m f1.8?

I currently own the 50mm but i've recently purchased the 17-55mm and can't see me using the 50mm that much. I had the Tamron 90mm Macro which was great for portraits but too slow in focusing. My question is do i trade the 50mm for an 85mm or is there something else i should be considering?
 
I had the Tamron 90...same prob...slow...I have the 17-50 Tamron...love it...and a canon Mk1 50 f1.8...shoot with a 50d...i love the 50...and intend using it more...but feel that the 85 would be great on full frame...but maybe not use it as much on my crop...I also have a 70-200 f4L that covers and gives enough separation for me...

So I would stick with your 50 f1.4...poss my next purchase...only if you use a 70-200 that would cover the rest...the 85 would be a purchase if you loved your Tam 90...but thats just me...

Not too sure if this helps you any...but just me tuppence worth...

Hi,

I hated my 85mm 1.8, too much purple fringing for me, I sold it and the person I sold it too sold it fairly soon after that too, so I suspect he felt the same.

I then used a canon 100mm F2.8 Macro for portrait stuff after that and it absolutely hammered the 85mm for sharpness and colour, although slower AF it was far superior image wise, I always think the cheaper Canon lens' have a particular colour hue to them and isn't nearly as good as their more expensive and L lens'

Having re-read you post, I would have thought selling the 70-200 F4 and the 50mm F1.4 to buy a Canon 70-200 F2.8 would be the obvious move for you seeing that you already have the 17-50, no?

Thanks all for your advice.

Mike, i have just update my Sig block to reflect my camera bag. Had a bit of a change over since.
