Canon 50mm f1.8 Ebay related.

Probably a stupid question but I have noticed that their are plenty of canon 50mm f1.8 lenses on ebay which are brand new and selling for sub £70.

I have also noticed that all of these lenses seem to be located in Hong Kong. Are they genuine or am I best off going for a second hand lens for a similar price?
 
I don't know if the Lenses you are looking at are genuine or not. Try asking the seller for a serial number, no reason not to give it if it's genuine.

However, a friend just got a Camera bundle and got a Canon 50mm f1.8 with it, but he already had it's big brother. I bought it from him for £55, It's a great little lens, Can't recommend one enough.

If you go for one, I hope you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying mine.
 
Try Kerso, I think his price is near the £70 mark new, though the way I look at it is paying the extra helps keep local companies going and means I can go back for aftersales service if I need it.
 
I am quite confident that "non-genuine" lenses don't exist.

Why buy of ebay when you can get a good price off Ian with a UK warranty.
 
They're likely to be perfectly fine grey imports. They're probably exactly the same as you'd by from a UK retailer, but as they're from Asia they're unlikely to have a full warranty and you may find yourself with problems if it developed a fault.
As Ian has said, its worth taking a look at Kerso's website. He usually has then for £70-75 and has excellent after sales service should you ever need it.
 
I was in contact with Kerso the other day regarding the 50mm, he is struggling to get a hold of them at a good price. Will be worth another PM though

Haha it was a good one.

My mug is actually a 24-105 and I recently got the actual lens. Walked into a mates room who knows the lenses value holding the "lens" (mug) and dropped it right in front of him. The look on his face.....

I'm just getting an idea of prices currently as I don't really have the spare cash at the moment.

I'm not able to see the classifieds on here for another month or so but then saying that it'll give me time to get some spare cash together :)

They come up quite frequently on here so you will get one.
 
It is a strange lens. Everyone tends to rave about them (good IQ and aperture range for not much money) yet eBay is swamped with them and around 3 or 4 a day are being sold a day.

They do sell for around £65 used which means demand is good but still odd that so many people are continually selling them. Guessing they read about all the reviews and buy one because it is cheap only to find they have no actual use for it?
 
Or they use it so much they decide to upgrade to the 1.4...
 
I find it strange. I've had a play with one attached to a mates 500d and loved the results. Almost bought one this month but opted for a efs 55-250 lens instead.

Thats the next one on my list, Did you get a good deal on it?
 
I had a 50 1.8 and was really pleased with the IQ I got from it, until I upgraded to the 50 1.4 and it's a massive difference in IQ. The 1.8 is good, the 1.4 is a whole lot better, but it is around 3 times the cost. I do find it a little bit long on a crop body though, I normally use my primes on my 5D3 only.
