Ok, the nifty cost me about £90. The L series lens costs about £900.

So, my question is, same camera, same conditions, would the results from the L series lens blow the nifty away?

Sorry if this appears to be a stupid question, but I don't own expensive lenses (but intend to eventually), and I'd like to get a comparison.

Cheers.

I ahve both and the 24-70 easy beats the 50 for richness in colour.. the 50 is easy as sharp though..

50/1.8 has 'dodgy' bokeh and I find the AF to be not particularly accurate. Needless to say, the Ls won't have these problems.

Most of the time, the images would be indistinguishable.

You buy prime lenses like the 50 1.8 because it has a very low f/number.

You buy the L zoom because it has lots of other attributes, namely build quality, AF, and of course zoom range. You also get superb image quality, but it's rubbish at f/1.8.

The relationship between price and image quality is obscure.

"rubbish at f/1.8" ?

It doesn't go to f/1.8 ;)
