Canon 50mm & focus, recompose

I borrowed a 50mm 1.8 canon lens last night and every time I locked focus and recomposed, it kept searching for focus.

I'm not sure why this was, the person I borrowed from said he had never had that problem.

Any ideas?

As soon as I put my zoom lens back on, it stopped happening, so it's not a camera error and I doubt its a user error...
 
Sounds like the focus is in servo mode rather than one shot, worth double checking the settings just in case.
 
Nope, my camera is never in servo.
 
are you locking with the shutter release button. It only tends to work either rear button focusing which i do (and privides full time manual override) or the lens in manual focus and manually focussing.!
 
Was trying to lock with the * button.

Is this possibly a fault? I've used this lens myself and never had the same problem. Never experienced it with any lens.

My friend has never had trouble but he doesn't actually seem to recompose after looking at the photos on his fb. (he's quite new)

That button normally locks the exposure, unless the setting has been changed.

Best way to do it IMHO is set the 'custom functions' so the back button focuses the lens (so letting it go 'locks' the focus where you left it!), and set the shutter button to metering and shutter release.

This is the best of both worlds and means you can focus and re-compose very very easily. After a day or so it'll become second nature and you'll wonder why you ever did it any other way (if you're anything like me).

Except that the 20d doesn't have a back button. :P
