Canon 55-250IS and compatible 1.4x teleconverter

I read somewhere recently where it was claimed that the Canon 1.4x teleconverter can not be used on the Canon 55-250IS lens. Does anyone know if this is true and would an alternative make, IE, Sigma work on this lens?

Anyone with experience of this combo?

I dout any converter will work with that lens and retain AF do to a body limitation of max aperture of f5.6 for AF
 
The canon one definitely won't work, there's a chance that other brands might, but as it's an ef-s lens, the rear protrudes a lot more, so you'd have to be very careful.

Also of note is that the lens wasn't designed with TCs in mind, the quality will probably be somewhat lacking, and you'll lose autofocus with anything other than a 1D body.

Long story short, I wouldn't suggest it :D
 
Thanks guys for your replies. I have done a bit of research on the Canon site and they have confirmed that the 55-250 will not work with a teleconverter, but have suggested a 70-200 f2.8, will carry on saving. :lol:

The lens might be ef-s, but the converter would be EF, so if you could get it on in the first place, it would fit. However it's unlikely the lens, TC, and camera would communicate properly, so to be honest the body probably wouldn't know there was a TC there in the first place, so it would still have a go at autofocussing even if it wasn't a 1D.

But these are just technicalities. Don't do it. Get a 70-200 :D
 
The only possible way would be to have an extension tube (I'm sure there's one type that works with EF-S) between the lens and the TC. But that would result in an inability to focus at infinity and even more loss of light.

Probably a lot easier to just get a bit closer.

70-200mm f4 works well with a 1.4x
