Hi, I was wondering if any one might be able to give some advice.

I have been using my 550 with a RF-602 to fire a 430EX11 off camera, which has all worked very well.

However I was on holiday last week and wanted to use the internal flash but it would not pop up.

When I checked the camera menu for internal flash settings, I get an error message "This menu can not be displayed as an external flash is attached"

It is like it thinks it still has a flash on the hot shoe, if I attach the 480 it still works ok.

Do you think it is an internal fault with the camera?

There's a micro switch under one of the spring plates in the hot shoe, wiggle it with a toothpick or some such and it should stop thinking there is still a flash mounted.
 
Try restoring the camera to factory settings. I had a problem with a 400D not firing the internal flash AF assist beam, and this sorted it. Always worth a try, sometimes a reset just fixes things.
