Just wondering has anyone much to say about this combination in terms of canon and others saying to make the most of 18mp sensors you need L glass. Im considering getting this lens as an everyday lens. Is this lens too much for a 550D?

Nope not all, it's a cracking lens.
This lens has been discussed many times and it's a clear winner.
Technically it is not an L lens but that's only because it's an EF-S (for cropped bodies) but's as sharp as a good L lens.
