Canon 550D Error 20/50

So my camera has wigged out and it is probably out of warranty, I am going to check out what canon have to say regarding the problem but I suspect it is the shutter.

It does work for about one shot but that is about it otherwise it produces error 20 or 50.

I am not sure whether Glover & Howe will pay out for this or not. But any form of advice would be great.
 
According to the Canon website for error codes http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Cons....aspx?faqtcmuri=tcm:14-754472&page=1&type=faq it seems like either a mechanical or electrical fault or maybe both. You could try taking both the batteries out (main and clock/memory) and leaving it a while, and also try cleaning the contacts of the camera and lens and try again. It doesn't look too good for you though, maybe it needs a trip to the service centre.
 
Usually it's a watch battery type thing - either on the base of the camera (coin required to open it) or in the main battery compartment.
 
Okay now I know I am not retarded (my mother had me checked).

But I have had my camera gripped for about 3 months now and it would seem the cause of my failure was actually two very flat batteries. So flat that it didn't have enough juice in them to get the shutter moving more than once.

So good news that it isn't a pricey cost but on the other hand I am certain that my camera hasn't been reporting a dying battery to me. Is that normal for a gripped camera?!

Hi

If you remove the main battery (might need to remove battery drawer as well) the small cell battery is located inside there (normally in a little plastic carrier) - to one side

I have read of issues of non-genuine kit not working quite as it should on some occasions.. Might be worth trying an original instead?

Yep I'd agree with this, remove the grip and use just a genuine battery in the body and see if the error replicates, if not, then run through a process of elimination, trying the generic batteries in your body to see if one of these is causing the issue, then the grip - if possible with genuine battery in it. Hopefully you'll find the culprit ...
