canon 550d lens

Thinking of buying a 550d body what wide to tele zoom lens would you recommend i can"t afford a L lens

Tamron 17-50 is a good choice IMO.

Hmm, I'd say 50 is quite a short tele.

The Canon 28-135 is a good range, although you may wish an ultra wide angle lens to complement it as well. On a crop sensor, 135 is a fairly respectable range, and 28 is still wider than most PnS cameras (35).

Canon 15-85 is good quality great results, fast focus with USM motor.
