Canon 550D or FujiFilm HS10?

... or something else?

I can't decide. I used to use a Canon EOS650 Film SLR. Currently my "best" camera is a FujiFilm s6500fd bridge. I want to move up!

I'm currently torn between the Canon 550D and Fujifilm HS10. Both appear to be brilliant cameras, though quite different! I like the ease of the bridge camera and the kudos of a DSLR. I also like the idea of combining HD video. So what's the best one for me? Or is there a third option?

If I bought the Canon my existing 35-70 lens would fit as would my dedicated flash. And I'd have a "REAL" DSLR. :) It's supposed to be good in low light with not much noise at high ISO - this attracts me. The lack of real telephoto focal distance is not good (though 18MP does give a bit of leeway for cropping - "post-processing digital zoom"!) and the potential huge cost (and weight and inconvenience) of extra lenses etc. is another downside.

The HS10 has an unbelievable focal range and several gizmos (panoromic, in-camera HDR etc). But I don't think it takes a dedicated flash with TTL metering. I don't know about its low light performance. And it's not an SLR, and only 10MP; but it's almost half the price of the Canon.

So I'm looking for good low-light performance, good zoom range, HD video and dedicated flash. And a pixel count that gives the flexibility to crop - especially for the odd macro shot if telephoto won't focus at close range.

I do general amateur photography with a bent towards reportage.

Anybody got any helpful comments?

Thanks!!

Hi, I would suggest the Canon without a doubt, and save up for some extra glass. I've seen some shots from the Fuji, and tbh, doesn't look that good to me. Maybe, go in and have a look at both? :)

my friend has had the fuji for the last couple days and i think it is very good for what it does, and image quakity looks great, but if you want a dslr and the ability to buy quality lenses then a dslr is what you need.iso the canon will win, cropping the canon will win,
hd video the canon will win, image quality the canon will win, focus speed the canon will win, colour the cann will win.
for telephoto and macro you wil need separate lenses for a dslr and it will costbut worth it), the fuji does both and the macro is very good. the fuji has a 24mm-720mm lens in 35mm terms) which gives plenty of scope.

also depends how much money your willing to invest, also if you stick to it.

dSLR will give much better quality, but it needs good glass I am afraid. 35-70mm simply won't cut it I am afraid. It will leave you wanting more, much more. Fuji may be a nice do it all with a lot of trade-offs. If any image is fine then fuji will be enough. If you demand more then pick dSLR. Have a look at used market (do you buy your cars and house new?) - and you can save for a decent lens. 40D would be a nice starting point.

The Canon 550D is supposed to be a superb bit of kit so i would go for that plus you have unlimited lens options in the future.

I'd go for the 550D + the 18-55 IS kit lens. The kit lens is surprisingly good, and a much better match for the crop sensor than your 35-70 [I've got one too, although it is quite nice at the long end (net 112mm) for portraits on my 450D].

Go for the 550D. I'd also advise you to go second hand but since you are interested in HD video the only other cheaper option in the Canon range would be a used 500D and the HD video in the 500D is somwhat limited.
