Canon 550d - Sigma Non DG Lens compatible?

Sorry to have to ask such a basic question but.

I am looking at a second hand Sigma 50-500mm APO HSM lens for my Canon 550d.
It would appear to not have the markings of the EX DG APO version that every shop is currently selling.

My question is, will this lens work with my APS-C size image sensor?
Or is it an older model that is for the full frame cameras.

DG is just a coating on the rear element, shouldn't* have any problems on your 550D (there is no issue putting full frame lenses on crop, it's the other way around that doesn't work).

*Of course, being an old third party lens there is a chance it'll have some communication issues with newer DSLR models though.

AFAIK there's no problem using full frame lenses on APS-C but some older Siggy lenses from the pre digital days don't like DSLR's. Some (maybe all, I dunno...) can be rechiped by Siggy to work on digital but I think that unless there was a very good reason for going down this route you'd probably just move on to another lens.

So, if the lens is quite old it will be worth checking that it does work on digital before handing over any cash.

Ask sigma to see if it'll work on your body. I've got a non DG 120-300 that works on newer bodies such as 1Dmk3 and 5Dmk2 but I'd double check.

APS-C cameras are not restricted by what lenses they can and cannot use.

Its the FF bodies that cant use lenses designed for crop bodies, but a crop can use crop of FF lenses.

I originally thought it was the newer EX DG lens, but have since learned that it isn't.
