Hi,
I am going to have a go at some portrait work and I would like to shoot tethered with my 550d and 20 d into Lightroom.

I was looking for any advice or things I should consider, doing remotely looks very expensive.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Doing it remotely with the Canon's entry bodies is impossible, so you will need to use a USB lead. We use a 450d and 500d tethered at work and the only way to get remote shooting is to buy a 7D or up.

To begin with I'd actually seriously consider trying EOS Utility for remote shooting, it's pretty slick and can let you customise pretty much any setting - except mode (ie. Av, Tv, M), whilst showing you the full live view picture.

Lightroom would be good for organising the photos later, but for the actual shooting I prefer EOS utility.

The 20D should work tethered however, you will not get the live preview.
 
I've only managed to have a play using the EOS utility and my 550d and it is so simple, just plug and play immediately, the EOS utility lets you control pretty much if not everything on your camera.
Only issue I found was the usb lead was a little short.

thanks, I thought I would have to do it with a cable, that confirms it. I guess I should be able to buy a longer cable from somewhere, are any issues with a longer lead? I don;t think there would be but just wanted to check with regards to resistance as the cable gets longer.
I was going to use the EOS software looks ok to me,

We use 30m leads at work, using USB>Ethernet extenders. They are £50 for the pair but if you need really long reach, they work great and CAT5 cabling is cheap and can be made to any length required.

Three to five meters will work fine without any boosters, after that they are required.
 
You can do remote shooting with the 550D, if by that you mean transferring the images over wireless direct to a laptop or pc and displaying them as you shoot .

To do that you need the eyefi wireless SD cards, .Jpg only cards are around £50 and RAW cards around £99.
