Looking to upgrade my 1000d, looking a few opinions on the 550d vs 40d. Take all types of photos, alot of motorsport and of my dogs moving fast. Any opinions very welcome.

Cheers

Barry

Just noticed put this in wrong section, if someone could move it to equipment section please.

Depends. 40D is better built, has better ergonomics and a higher FPS. But the 550D is newer, shoots video (possibly not of use to you, but it's a bonus), and will probably perform slightly better at higher ISOs.

The 550d is really good at high iso (my GF has one) I was supprised to be honest, and at 18 mp it's got a lot more pixlels, what it hasn't got is a very fast continous shooting, so if your into sports or stuff where you need to shoot rapidly I'd go with the 40d, if you do low lights the 550d.

I was thinking of changing my 500d for a secondhand 550d is it with the trade for better picture quality in low light.

The 40D you will pick up cheap second hand but the 550D is only a year old with a great sensor and fantastic video.

Not sure why you are buying an older body though I'd be going for a 600D or a 60D if i was you ;)

I have looked at the 600d, I didn't like the articulated screen.

Decision made, 550d is on its way. Thanks everyone for the advice!

What's wrong with an articulated screen? They can be very useful when taking photos from unusual angles.

My wife has an articulated screen on her Panasonic FZ100, and I kinda wish I had one on my 550D. It just makes it possible to get those extra shots above or behind things you normally can't see around. Useful, not essential though IMO.

To be honest image quality wise there won't be a great deal of difference, if any. The 40D can handle higher ISO pretty well, not as good as the 550D but there is very little in it. What makes the 40D better in my opinion is the feel and extra thumb wheel on the back, also the higher FPS is very noticeable. I think the 550D has the same AF system as the 450D (could be wrong) if it has the 40D's is better. Could some one clarify that I'm on my phone and cba googling it.

All in all both are very capable bodies and you will get top results with both.

I'd never trade in my 40D for a 550D . I love the build quality of it . When i bought it I tryed out a xxxD and the 40D just felt much more like a camera to me ,a nice weight in my hand . I have shot at high iso in a pitch black cave with very little noise . I don't tend to print at huge sizes so 10.1 MP is very sufficent and can print upto A3 if I don't need too much cropping .

Just seems to me like something else to break to me!

At the school I work in we've got 12 Canon camcorders with articulated screens. Some of them (the ones we suspect have been dropped) and a little loose, but they all work. Cameras about about 2 years old, and get a lot of use.
