canon 550d vs nikon d300

So i've had my 550d for a while now, it was great at first as i was into video. Now i'm 100% photo and feel like i need to transition into a photo-only camera. I just don't want to swap if im going to get pretty much identical photos. anyone have experience of both cameras that could advise me?

You can't compare an entry level camera with a pro body. Majority of DSLR camera's have HD Video capabilities nowadays, the pure photo body would probably be only available on a medium format camera.

What do you feel lacking with the 550D. Personally, its the lens you put on the camera and setting the camera up right for the shot that makes the image. The lens is the big winning, I would always invest in good lenses rather than the latest camera body.
 
I'm now using a 650d with L lenses and the images are just fine. There is a difference to those I initially shot with the stock 18-55 kit lens included.

That said I really would like a 5d Mk III :thumbs:

Just to clarify, the D300 does not have video, the D300s does though

I have recently bought a D300, but as i upgraded from an Olympus E520 it was quite a big step up, but i have no experience with the 550D i can't really comment
 
Image quality is comparable between any aps-c camera. I doubt anyone could tell the difference between any at iso 100 for example. Newer models will perform better at higher iso's and have more mega pixels but image quality hasn't changed much. What you are paying the extra money on is better camera performance such as faster frame rate and faster Auto Focus etc.. as well as stronger weather sealed bodies. Your money would be much better spent on a new lenses. I hear the kit lens on the Canon is pretty poor.

Like someone mentioned above you got to look at what your camera isn't giving you then look for a model that does.

Cheers guys,

i've already got high quality lenses including the sigma 30mm 1.4.

the fact that it's weather sealed and higher fps is nice, especially as i shoot skateboarding alot but i don't know if its justifying losing a couple of hundred swapping bodies.

Well you won't be just swapping bodies you will have to replace all your high quality lenses too. You have invested in Canon i would stick with them.
