I recently borrowed a 580 EXII from a friend as I was taking a trip to Madame Tussauds and the built in flash leaves a lovely circular shadow in the bottom of the frame.

In my haste to get to the station I stuck the flash on, and just fired a shot to make sured it flashed. It worked, excellent!

Got to Madame Tussauds and fired a shot off and it was waaaay overexposed, checked settings, on AV mode, white balance good, all ok. Fired off a couple more, same result. Then realised the camera and flash weren't talking to each other so the second I took the shot it auto changed the settings to compensate for no flash. Also the flash wasn't adjusting with the zoom.

Thought it could have been the contacts as the camera hadn't had a flash on it for a while, checked them out, cleaned them up a bit, no luck so had a day with no flash in dark rooms :(

When we got home I tried out the 420EX, works perfectly. Had a search online to see if there was a compatibilty issue but people have said online that they use the two together with no issues.

To summarise, has anyone else had these issues or know of a compatibility issue?

It might be a compatibility issue, 10D is getting on a bit, but nine time out of ten these things are user error. 580EX is a complicated beastie if you're not used to it ;)

But you'll find the answer here. Hope you like reading http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

Even with the flash putting out full each time, you could have put the camera on manual and maybe reached settings that would have given you some useable images. In those circumstances I am sure that something would have been better than nothing at all.

The camrea wasn't registering the flash atall, I also had the guy I borrowed it from who has been using the flashes for some time who agreed it just wasn't registering the flash.

If it wasn't that people online hadn't said they use the two together than I would have just put it down to compatability.

As for using it on Manual, I did this for a while but decided to just enjoy the models than spend the entire time adjusting settings. Plus I wasn't the only one in the group with a camera.

so it was not in the TTL mode. It really shouldnt make a difference what lens it used with as it meters off the preflash. To me it sounds like the flash was in a manual mode and hence why getting the over exposed images.

I'm not sure if ETTL was on or off but I'm fairly sure it wasn't in manual. It was working fine on the 40d seconds before and after, just not on the 10d and we weren't changing settings between changes.

I had this problem with my 400D.
All I had to do was screw the hotshoe back onto the camera as it had come loose and was making the flash wobble on the top, and every photo I took was at 1/1 even on ETTL.

I just did as it said but didn't use the glue just tigtened the screws

were the 10D and the 40D on the same settings? The flash must of been mounted correctly for it to trigger the flash regardless if it did it properly.

I'm not sure on the settings on the 40d at the time, but next time I can I will have another play and see if I can get it to work.

The 420EX i'm using now works perfectly, it did the same day the 580 exII didn't, and the 580EXii went on straight after taking the 420EX off.
