As I'm new to Canon (5DIII arrives on Monday) I'm not too clued up on their range of flashes. I want to get a 580EX as my main flash but not sure whether to get the original or the MkII version. Reviews seem to suggest the improvements are mainly cosmetic rather than affecting the light at all. Is the MkII worth the extra money?

The new 600 is nearly double the price, and needs at least two flashed to be of any benefit over the 580 series!

From memory the 580EX II

- recycles faster
- has a better mounting system (switch rather than wheel)
- is weather sealed

In my opinion yes it is worth the extra. I have 2 580EX IIs

i like the fast mounting system on the II's - it's so much quicker and is just more pleasing, the battery compartment is better to.

they are small improvements - but worth it if only a small price difference
