Canon 580ex stuck on 'manual'

Hi all and happy New Year!
Playing with my 580ex yesterday and it seems to be stuck on a manual setting so it doesn't adjust to 'zoom'. So in the top right corner of the display I have M and 14mm, the 14mm doesn't alter as you zoom...
I have read the book but I can't seem to get it back to auto mode. Its in ETTL mode.

Any thoughts? It used to be in auto mode but a friend was messing around with the settings at a party and I can't get it back to full auto.

Try a "Hard Reset" Turn off, Take the batteries out for about 1 min and see if that clars the problem

Not sure Bob! I did get to the point of random button pushing... Will get the flash and book out now I am sober.

Have you pushed the diifuser all the way back in until it clicks

First timer on here.
I have had this before,try to push the pullout defuser which drops in front of the flash back inside its housing fully,this should put it back to auto.
