Canon 5D Free Mirror Recall, which actually isnt free?

Afternoon all,

Just a quick one... am I being diddled here?...

Sent my Canon 5Dmk1 into Canon Elstree for the (and I quote) "free mirror fix recall" applicable to that body.

Now, today, I have received a quotation from them for £100 to do this work...

I ring them up, say I think there is some mis-understanding here, I thought this was free? Happy to pay for return postage but whats the other £90?

Woman explains that they are kindly replacing the mirror free of charge, but that then the camera has to have its shutter speed and exposure recalibrated..

I say, what does that mean?

She says no idea, let me find out...
She returns, saying the mirror gets replaced and a new one fitted, but then they must make sure the shutter speed is still correct.

I then say, well the "free recall" is a little misleading, if there is actually other non-free work that has to be done.

Her response is a little short and basically says that replacing the mirror is 3 days work and I am lucky that they are doing that much for free, and I should be grateful that I am getting a new mirror which is an expensive item free of charge...

A little shocked tbh...

Anyone else had experience of this?

Read all the small print in the terms and if there is no mention of additional or supplementary costs tell them to return the camera to its originalstate if they have changed anything and that you will be contacting trading standards...

This sounds a bit fishy, a recall should be carried out free of charge to the customer as it's a programme designed to replace/enhance a component that is deemed defective by the manufacturer. The recall according to Canons website alludes to reinforcement items fitted into the assembly, not entire mirror replacement?

I would politely escalate the concern with the service centre to find a suitable resolution as you should not be paying for this in my humble opinion.

Just spoke to my dad who says Elstree replaced the shutter on 5D for FREE several years ago. He is sure there were no additional costs at the time.

Sounds like you are being ripped off.
