Canon 5d Mark ii or 1Ds iii

Ive been looking at these 2 cameras and Im really not sure which to go with. Ive heard a lot of people saying the AF on the 5d mark ii is awful yet many love the camera. I'd be mainly using the camera for shooting people but with some general use in other areas.
Which would you go with and why?
 
The 5D2 is a great camera, all depends on whether you need lighting fast AF? For most usage it's absolutely fine but if you have quick moving subjects then it is quite poor, central focus point and recompose is the norm. Everything else is great though and the important IQ is superb. If it's primarily people then 5D2 is better than the mkiii imo.
 
Thank you, that's what I was hoping for in a response. Guess I'll be going with the 5D2 then :)
 
Well, I had a 1 Ds3 for a few years and loved it, as has been said much better af than the 5 D2 (which was exactly the same as the original 5D I'm pretty sure) but I like the 1 series body size as I shoot with s/teles quite a lot.

Image quality is about equal, but the big difference is in the AF.........and I'd suspect a 1Ds3 would be more expensive.

how come you're not going for the 5d3, got to be around the same price as a 1ds3, and the 5d3 is arguably better in every way

The prices Ive seen on 2nd hand stuff the 5D mark 3 was about an extra £300 more than the 1ds iii. I had thought about just holding off for another month or so until I could go with the 5D3 but but at the same time I could put that extra money into glass.

Well, I've been fortunate always to have one from the first 1Ds to the 1 Dx, but the 5d3 is a very good body.
 
The slating of the AF on the 5D mkii is a revisionist thing. It was never all singing and all dancing but it was fine while the mkii was the go to wedding camera from day of release until the mkiii arrived!

For people shots it's a great camera!

what's your opinion on 1ds3 vs 5d3?

5D3 is a bit more expensive, but then it is the best of the lot until you look into 1DX.
