Well I took the plunge and my new camera will be here tomorrow. I'm very excited but don't no where to start as far as learning to use this bad boy. I was thinking I need to figure out the focusing system first. Any pointers?
 
It pretty much is (the same). There are still only 3 settings which /really/ matter on the camera. Then some extras to make doing certain things a bit easier.

As everyone will have their camera set up differently, according to what they're shooting, and more importantly, personal preference, the best thing to do is read the manual.

I asked around a bit when I first moved to a 1 series, because of the supposedly complicated AF system. Wasn't any help really, better off reading what each of the settings do, according to the people who made the camera, and then choosing the ones you like.
 
I suppose I will narrow it down to what it can do and study up on those points one at a time. Focus system seems to be a good starting point. There is also a bracketing feature that I'm interested in. As far as reading the manual I just can't get through one of those. I have never been able to read a manual.
 
If you want to get the absolute best out of the 5D3's excellent AF system for moving subjects, you're going to have to do some reading and get some practise. But you can also get by pretty well just by using the subject pre-sets and leave it at that.

The AF system is fantastically capable (same as 1DX) though needs a good fast-focusing lens, ie L-grade, to make the most of it. With that combo, if you're not getting good results, then that's the time to really dig deep into the set-up menus, and more than likely sharpen up your technique - servo tracking fast action subjects is not easy. The camera is unlikely to be the weak link in the chain.

Apart from the AF system, 5D3 is just like any other quality DSLR.

Yep, very good book, although its best read in conjunction with the manual.

I know its quite sad but i had to go in to hospital a few days after getting my 5DMKIII, I was more worried about spending a few days without my camera rather than the op i was going in for. I loaded my iPad up with the manual and this book. I had plenty of time to read both but i was itching to get home and try out all the stuff i was learning.

Congrats to the OP on his new Camera.:thumbs:

I must admit that the tutorials by rudy on the usa canon website and reading stuff on here has given me a fairly good insight into the camera.
 
Shayne, I brought a book by David Busch on the Canon 50d and It has been a great help and reference book,If he has done one on the 5D MkIII that might be worth an investment,all the best with your new camera you have chosen wisely.
