Canon 5D 'mirror fix'

I bought a 5d on this forum a couple of weeks ago and although it's fine i can't help but worry it's going to fail with the dreaded mirror falling off sooner rather than later, so i contacted Canon and gave them the serial number, they said that the camera has never been in for this fix.

Where i got a bit confused was, they said they will not do a pre-emptive fix if i send it to them, they will however do a free repair, but only when/if the mirror does fall off, stable door, horse comes to mind lol, am i worrying about nothing?

I always have a backup bodies with me on a shoot so it would not be a major disaster if it did fail, but it was just for my peace of mind that i wanted to get it done.

Any thoughts...
 
How can you fix something that isn't broke?.... the mirror may, or may not fall out.....
I also bought a 5D from here some time ago, and last week the mirror fell out...so yes, Canon will do a free repair as it's a known issue, can't ask for more than that really.
 
It may not be 'broke' but as it's a 'known issue' i was just under the impression they would fix it before it broke, if you get my drift.

Yes, I get what you're saying..... I just figured that not every 5D has had a mirror fall out....
 
And not every one hasn't had the mirror fall off lol.

Think i'll just play it by ear, thanks for your input.

Lol..... well at least when it does 'break' , you know it'll be a free fix... turnaround is 3 days....

Mine fell off last week, will send it in next week once I've contacted them and let you know how I get on.
 
Mine has never fallen off, pretty sure at one time they didn't insist the repair was done retrospectively, can't say I have ever worried about it though.

Out of curiosity from the above that have had mirror problems what did the affected cameras serial number start with?
 
I'll have a look later at mine and let you know re the serial number Rich.

My understanding from reading up on it previously was that they were fixing it whether it had fallen off or not, but that was a good few years ago when I got the 5D, so maybe that has changed now.
 
I bought a 2nd hand mk1 (off here) and the mirror had been repaired before it fell off, the previous owner was a CPS member though, dont know if that made any difference and it was a few years ago (possibly 3/4).

Bought mine second hand off here as well, don't think it's been done but will find out soon enough....
 
Thanks Al, just interested to see if its any particular range that are affected as in the earlier models

I am pretty sure Canon did fix them regardless, might email Elstree out of interest to see what they say re the current position

Mine has a 2 serial number, can say for certain it has never been modified, so will check to see if they added the extra fittings on later cameras (when I can be bothered as it will either fail or not)

The fix might already have been done. You'll be able to see two little metal plates holding the mirror if it has been done. I'm not sure if I should link to images showing the fix but a quick google will bring up plenty.
 
I did have a good look, and it doesn't look like mine has had any reinforcements added, thanks.
