Hello everyone

I currently use a Canon 40D but after reading about user 99 errors and premature shutter failures, are now toying with the idea of getting a Canon 5D Mk11. The 40D will then become the backup camera.

However the 5D is a lot of money (in theory you could 3 40Ds for the price!)and having tried one (5D 11) out at Jessops was expecting from a full frame a quantuum leap in quality, which was not to be. However, a PC screen is probably not an accurate or ideal means of determining quality.

I use a 24-70 2.8 Canon lens which I understand is better matched to the full frame format of the 5D, although on a good day its not bad when used on the 40D. I shoot in RAW which hides the errors

So if anyone out there has experience of using both camers I would welcome some comments, or if anyone can recommend a suitable backup for the 40D.

Does anyone use the 24-70 on a 5D - sorry for so many questions.
Thanks Richard

I rented a 24-70 for my 5d2 when I was shooting an exhibition in London. My camera never felt so complete, was gutted when I had to send it back. On the 5D2 that lens blew me away completely in comparison to what I've used in the past but I can't say I have any experience using a 40D. Also, it's a lot of weight to carry around but shouldn't be a problem if you've got a neck strap anyway. In saying that though, it's a nice weight. I find the 5D2 very comfortable to handle. I've got small hands so it fits perfectly. I've heard people with big hands say that out of the Nikon, Sony and Canon the 5D2 is the smallest body to hold.

Yep, I use a 24-70mm on a 5D MkII. I sold a 40D and replaced it with the 5D MkII, the difference in quality IMHO justifies the cost, not that the 40D is a slouch far from it.

The 5DMkII quality at higher ISO is excellent, which is what I use it for, have a look at the pics posted on the Canon forum

This helped me decide to go for it.
