I am in Svalbard weith my newly aquired mk11 and i am using a netbook which i want to use to connect my camera to, I have neither the software with me or a card reader in order to store my pics, I have snail mail and am looking to download the file to connect the camera to store the pics,I will be able to p&p when i get home,Any advise please/

Not sure the software is still available online apart from an upgrade although think you can do some jiggery pokery to make the download think you already have it installed
Beg or borrow a card reader would be the best bet or use all your memory cards up (assuming you have a few with you)

Newly acquired camera means limited card storage considering the camera uses CF,I've a host of SD cards and figured to store my pics on a portable hdd via a companions net book,But I am advised to ensure that the software is installed,I only want to install the minimum on the net book as it is my companions and he doesn't have a canon mk11,Hope this prevents obvious replies.

Have to ask why did you go all that way without the necessary hardware/software and an adequate supply of CF cards?
Could you connect the camera to your companions netbook (windows should hopefully see it as an additional drive) download the pics and then transfer them to your portable HDD.

You might have a problem with Canon's software on a netbook - I seem to remember reading you need a minimum screen resolution and some netbooks don't provide this...
It might well be cheaper to buy another card reader to get you going for now, with some of the free software available online...
I assumed I could just connect the camera to the net book and transfer pics thereby avoiding removing the CF card,I once had the 400d that got a pin bent upon removing and refitting the CF card,Would I risc damaging anything by trying to connect without software installed on an EEPC 901,The 5D mk11 is brand new,Arrived day before I left,Am on board a ship and the northern lights are on view at Lofoten and card will be full very soon.didnt realise it took CF only and had planned to use my numerous SD cards

No it will be fine, Windows should search and find it as a new device then just open it up in my computer and copy as normal. Don't cut and paste just in case it goes wrong and you then still have the photos on the card
Unless you are very heavy handed and try to put the card in the wrong way round no reason it should bend the pins
Card reader is much faster than connecting the camera via usb and saves battery power too, just dont forget to format the card in the camera not the computer
If you can copy on to both the netbook and HDD, wouldn't want to lose anything after going all that way

I've always used a card reader, with a 300d, 30d, 7d and 5d2 and have never had any problems with damage to the pins in the camera cf slot.
Windows should auto detect and install the mass storage device driver for the camera when it's attached to the pc. Don't think I've ever used the software supplied with the cameras I've used.

I connected the camera and it detected it and was able to access the pics,Im not able to view the files on the EEPC as I'm shooting raw (embedded jpegs) I'm reluctant to store until I'm off the ship,The signal can drop out in middle of a download,I will have broadband on Svalbard and can download a viewer to check files when I'm there.
