Guy's i have been offered a job helping a photographer out a couple of days a week and the guy has told me i should purchase the above combination. I don't mind buying this as i will be getting paid for doing this work but i was wondering what other peoples opinions on this combo are?

I have never used a full frame camera before and i was wondering if the 24-105L will cover the focal length i will require for portraits inside and outside. He told me the 24-70L was too short for his liking and he is the boss so the 24-105L it is.
 
I have these and they are a great match, almost the perfect walk around outfit.

There's a reason they come as a kit - a perfect pairing!

For studio stuff, you'd arguably maybe want something faster but it's a fine combo and capable of simply stunning shots.

The 24-105 is a great lens on a full frame camera and the 5DII is a great full frame camera. So go for it.

Surely in a studio you'll have the benefit of lighting, and you'd tend to shoot around f8 anyway ? Now, outside or daylight "lifestyle" portraits I could understand.

In response to the OP, the 24-105 will give a better focal range for 3/4, head & shoulder, and head shots. The wide end will also allow you to get full length & group shots as well. It's a good range on full frame. :thumbs:

+1.. I went through a pile of lenses to end up at the 5DII and 25-105!

Had the 24-105 on my 60D and was great, now after a shoot the other day....wow! Another level.

One question though, seems a but odd that the guy is sending you out to get about £2K+ of kit just to help him out??

Either way... You'll never look back!!
 
Guess what... +1 on the combination. The 24-105 covers 90% of what you need - especially as a walkabout...
 
Ive got the same, Ive also got the 100-400 so when I walk about I can go from 24 through to 400 without loads of gear. You wont be disapointed at all.
 
+1 here. Didn't expect to like it but I've been bowled over by just how good this combo is.
 
Yep, I have this exact combination and I can safely say that they were made to match. This lens is what stays on my camera body 95% of the time.
 
Relative of mine has one and is disappointed with it. Personally I'd go for a 24-70mm f2.8, but if the boss says otherwise...
 
24-105 for everyday general purpose, but doesn't have the pop required for specific usage, so depends on what you're going to be shooting. With 2 people, it's usually good to have the bases covered i.e. one with a wide, one with telezoom, and switching out to primes when DOF/bokeh is needed.

Hi Chris,

He is planning on showing me the ropes so not just helping him out and i think he wants us to have the exact same combo for printing/editing reasons. I don't mind spending it if i'm getting the dough back.

I thought he was going to tell me to get the 24-70 too Alan but he says he needs a bit more reach so the 24-105 it is.
 
24-105mm is a nice single lens solution. I'd probably be happy with one, just 24mm seems too distorted for landscape work...

24-70 is probably better, as long as you can throw in at least 70-200mm f/4 to the mix. It may heavily depend on your style and shooting conditions
