Canon 5D MKII Tv mode clarification

I seldom use Tv mode and today just out of the blue decided to try something while playing with my camera and found that whatever ss I choose while on Tv mode the camera doesn't fix it while releasing the shutter. It just sets up something slow to compensate the lighting condition the moment I release the shutter.
Am I missing something here? Is there any setting that has been activated that has made it to force itself to not dramatically expose anything if I choose a ss that will do that? With my 7D whatever ss I choose it stays there even if the image is black.

Can someone please shed some light on this please.

Yes, there is nothing about it, at least I can't find it.

But I have found a few things in the meantime while testing it.
It seems that on Tv mode it reverts to a shutter mode that allows exposure, this of course when the widest aperture of the lens is selected.
If I want to keep the selected ss then I have to increase the iso as the viewfinder will show me what shutter speed its going to revert it to.

This is totally different from the 7D that no matter what if on Tv mode it will expose with with the selected shutter speed even if image is going to be pitch dark.

With the 5D MKII it seems that if I want to keep the selected shutter speed then I have to use M mode.
 
Did you have a flash gun on?
 
Like you I rarely use Tv, but having just checked, my 5D2 maintains the shutter speed I selected.

That is very strange. I fiddled with it and haven't stopped and it just will not stay put at the shutter speed I choose. If I keep the lens cap on and choose for example even 1/500 f/4 and ISO 800 just an example, on Tv mode and I release the shutter it will just give me 30 secs of exposure.

Do you use Back button focusing by any chance? For the life of me can't think it has anything to do with that anyway but hey, this has got me scratching my head.
What's your latest firmware version also by the way?

I do use back button focussing, set to position 3. Firmware 2.1.1
 
There is a 'safety' exposure setting in the custom menus, have a look in that

:) That was the one. It applies the exposure setting adequate for the image. It was enabled.

Phew! I was getting frustrated. Thanks for your help:thumbs:
 
My 7D seems to stay true to the shutter speed I set for it. I do usually use auto ISO though, which I find a useful function.

I'm going to have a play though my 7D and see if I can see what it could be.
