Right, iv had only a quick mess about with the video mode, now, im not too sure how this all works in the different modes..

Is there an idiots guide out there in netland? i cant seem to find one thats for newbs.. ;)

Im off on holiday on thursday and would love to be able to cope with the focussing and exposure problems there may be..

Thanks..

:)

I've not yet come across a guide for that. Although I have seen a lot of good advice on the Vimeo site, particularly in the 5dmk2 group. That might be a good place to start looking for hints.

Planet5D blog is also another good resource.

many thanks mate.. I'll have a shoofty.. :)

Cinema5d.com is another good resource. I've got a few tutorials, guides and link collections up on my site as well. General advice is keep it to 1/50 to avoid shutter speed, turn off all the special stuff like peripheral illumination correction etc. so you don't get frame jumps. Most CF cards should be fine, I use x133 cards and haven't had any issues although I can't shoot stills at the same time.

Mostly it's the same as with photography though. Make sure your liveview is set on movie display mode and isn't set to compensate for brightness then just expose as normal. ISO numbers follow the same rule as photography (I think), keep on the odd numbers to keep noise down i.e. 160,320,640,1250 etc. etc. Focusing is entirely manual.

Also keep it off the standard picture profile. I find neutral suits video best and retains most of the detail.

OK, thanks for that, i thought it did focus for you? it seems to when i use the AF-on button.. what about in GREEN SQ mode? i need to play with it more!!..

Thanks for the info...

It does if you hit down the AF-on button but I've found the slow speed of this and the hunting it does render it fairly useless when I'm actually videoing or even when framing to be honest. It's nothing like AF in stills mode so for those reasons I treat video as MF only, it's just much quicker and more accurate for me plus it's the way anything beyond a home movie will be focused anyway.

Thats all i want to use it for! home movie! while on holiday.. i suppose i could just use a nice wide angle lens and stop it down, that should make the focussing less erratic.. but im only guessing at that!! lol..

If it's nice and bright, for home movies, I'd stick a wide angle on and stop it down enough so that the hyperfocal distance basically covers pretty much everything. I know AF isn't technically unusable but I think you'll find it a big pain every time you try and use it.

Lol.. you have about as much faith in my ability as i have in my own! lol..

Thanks for that.. im going to play with it while im away, im sure i should get some nice stuff from it.

oh...and remember to shot in landscape position as if you will do it with camera in portrait position you would have to turn your computer monitor/tv ;D
or maybe you would have to use a special program to do it...
thats my 2p ;)

Haha.. Thanks Lukas.. at least i knew to do that.. lol.. but thats about all!! haha..

and if you dont have IS in lens, dont be surprised when you see the whole movie shakin' on a big screen ;D ..when I played one of the videos on 5d lcd (shot with 50mm) it was fine...in full HD resolution...shakyyyyyy ;)

lol, not a lack of faith in your ability, a lack of faith in the ability of the camera. I'm by no means a pro in either stills or the video department, autofocus is just not something that works well on any video 'SLR' really except for the Panasonic GH1.

Thank makes me feel better.. so this should only be tried when the camera is on a tripod.. i think its going to be a little bit of a pain the Arris! haha.. oh well, im still gonna try it.. if its rubbish, then i'll tell the wife off.. she should have bought me a video camera eh... ;)
