Canon 5D Mkii Vs Canon 1D Mkiii

Hi guys,

I currently have a 5D Mkii but have noticed that they sell for around the same price as a 1d Mkiii. At the moment I mainly shoot portraits and a few weddings for my part time business as well as being more and more interested in shooting football.

Would the swap between the two be a good idea? I hear the 1D has a better IQ which would be great for shooting football and wedding evenings and the 10 fps and extra AF points would be great for the 1st kiss, bouquet shots so that I don't miss a thing. My only concern is that I would miss the high mp on the 5d (although I don't find myself cropping all that much) and the increased capability under low light - ideal for the awful floodlights at the games I shoot and dark churches.

Has anybody been in a similar situation and swapped or even swapped the other way? Would love to hear peoples opinions on this

for a start - the 1d has a smaller sensor, but has faster AF I think you just need to choose which one is more important to you. pretty easy I think ?!

Interested in knowing where you heard that the 1DMk3 has better IQ than the 5DMk2?

The 1DMk3 has better AF, faster FPS and a 1.3x crop which may help with reach for football.

It has a smaller sensor with a lot less MPs, 10 compared to 21.

The high ISO of the 5DMK2 is better than the high ISO of the 1DMk3 although the 1DMk3 is no slouch,

The best bet would be the 1DMk4, but at about £3500 new and few available yet s/h or a s/h 1DsMk3 circa £3000 they may be out of your price range.

I was told by a couple of friends that have used them - not true?

The Mk IV would be ideal but waaay out of my price range for now

I'd stay with the 5D Mk2 for most of the reasons already given. My friend (the 5D Mk2 owner) and I have shot weddings in much the same low light conditions you mentioned with both camera types and I can clearly say the 5D Mk2 won hands down over my 1D Mk3 at the high ISO settings. I wouldn't worry too much about having all those extra AF points either, most of the time we find ourselves using the centre spot only, as we like to stay in control. I guess it's much to do with the way you shoot really, but for overall IQ, stay with the 5D Mk2
