OK,I managed to get a 5d MKIII Production Body today, it will be in workflow for proper work from Monday, but a few images taken today are attached below as well as a few thoughts

(These are all daylight images, taken today, will add some higher ISO images later on, the ones just taken were really just to check tracking and general setup)

First Shock was the buffer, RAW & JPG buffer only 6 Shots!!!!, using a 90MBs sec CF card buffer clears fast - infact enough to allow unlimited 2fps shooting, but 6!! Thats 2 less than the 5DII,

Tracking was fine following a vehicle at 30mph without problem, runs of 10+ images never et go and followed and focused without fault.

I have some concerns over the settings for in camera jpg, the images produced look way over processed.

Anyway a Few Real World Tests while out walking the dog!

What's the buffer like shooting RAW+SRAW?

RAW+JPG (6)
RAW Only (12)
SRAW only (12)
RAW + JPG Seperate Cards (7)

RAW only I can manage 17 on a 90mbs card before it stutters, or just over 3fps constant

Well i'm no expert but the 5D MKIII RAW compared to the 5D MKII RAW looks very good..?

OK Here are a Few Lower Light HIGH ISO Images

All are Shot RAW and converted to JPG with NO Sharpening or NR added

Presumably those have a bit of chroma NR done though, I see absolutely none which would be very unusual for raw files?

No Changes to the file at all - Straight PS CS5 Convert Raw to Full Size Jpg & Crop.

And a Good Point on the Technical Side

Eyefi cards work fine in the SD Slot (As Expected), but the EyeFi Connection Settings Screen is now in the 5DIII Men System

Looks amazing. What lens did you use for these shots?

Will you be testing it with the kit lens?

Will you be testing it with the kit lens?

The ones of the car were done with a kit 24-105, (Just not the one that cmae with the body, an older one I had to hand rather than unpacking all the 5DIII box).

So far with the Kit lens, It really seems better than the 5DII, the 24-105 I used with it suffered with a fair bit of CA (Like Most), and the built in CA Reduction does seem to work on it. When I get to the office on Monday will give it a run with an 85 1.2 II and see how it copes with the CA on that :D

But the tracking speed seems fine with the 24-105, hopefully will be better light tomorrow and will try and find it some more challenging targets

Much appreciated!

Richard, I'd be interested in 6fps burst figures using a UDMA card?...spec says 18 continuous for just RAW.

You'll get sick of all the questions soon, but thanks anyway!!

George.

Its no problem George

RAW only (CF) - Using a 400x 32GB Trancend UDMA Card

EDITED WITH UPDATE

With Auto Light Optimiser On
Display Shows Burst of (10) available, at 6fps I actually get 14 before the buffer fills, then drops to about 1fps

With Auto Light Optimiser Off
Display Shows Burst of (12) available, at 6fps I actually get 15 before the buffer fills, then drops to about 1fps

On this card 400x UDMA it takes about 7 seconds to fully dump the buffer to the card from full to empty.

SOME STRANGE BUFFER READINGS - But here is the list that the camera reports and actual figures using the above card

RAW (10) Actual (14)
MRAW (07) Actual (10)
SRAW (08) Actual (12)

So it seems the extra processing involing M & S Raws slows the buffer even more than using full RAW!!

This looks lower than the spec....should be 12 frame burst normal card and 18 with UDMA according to manual..... but the MRAW and SRAW are shown as having that effect in the manual...strange!!
Thanks!

Hmm, Have tried three different 90MB/s 400x Transcend UDMA Cards and all give the same result, they are the only UDMA ones I have to hand at the moment to try, but will give it a go with a different brand of card on Monday. See if that changes the results

OK, Richard, be interested to see the results.
My real interest, however, (apart from the above) is how the IQ and particularly noise at higher ISO compares with the 7D and, more importantly, with the 1Ds 3, my current bodies.

George.

Had to make a account just to comment how pleased i am with these results. Have not seems results like this yet from the 5D III.

Thanks

7D will have no where the IQ the 5D3 have at higher iso.

Yes, ok perhaps my comment was a bit ambiguous, really want to compare the high ISO results on the 3 bodies, I like the 7D apart from the noise above 800 iso, and hope the 5D3 is quite a lot better and the 1.6 crop is great for wildlife on the 7D.

IQ comparison on the 1Ds3 and 5D3 will be interesting, though.

OMG 25600 ISO looks like 1600 ISO on my 400d!!!!!!!!

Do you have HighISO noise reduction activated? If you do you will not get the full buffer....and it would explain the lack of chroma noise. ;)

Hi :)

New member here. I noticed your thread on another forum and thanks for posting these.

I do weddings and was wondering what the buffer was like when shooting RAW to both cards? I'm thinking confetti shots. I need a 2-3 seconds use at 3fps minimum, but ideally more.

I'm considering the 5d3 vs the 1dx, but if the buffer is only, say, 7-12 shots with RAW going to both cards I'm not sure I'll have enough, especially with the SD card slot not supporting the faster cards. Not an issue for many people, but could be for me.

Thanks for your help! And enjoy your new camera ;) Reports are positive so far - it looks great!

With RAW to UDMA CF and High Speed SD Buffer is (12) In Reality I get about 14

No the High ISO Noise Reduction is Off, not something I would ever use.

Richard, when you look at P 121 in the manual, it says RAW max burst 13 with standard CF card and 18 with UDMA....looks like you aren't getting that??

Important for me for wildlife.

Thanks, George.

OK if anyone wants to play with Shadow detail,

Here is a link to the RAW from an image taken today, to give a good idea of what shadow detail can be recovered

This is the image stored in the RAW file above

You will need the latest Adobe RAW Beta to read the file

Hi George

I am using a 90MB's Trancend 400x UDMA CF Card, and the Buffer Display in the Viewfinder reads 12, in reality I get 14-15 before it stalls, but no I am not getting the claimed 18

I have tried 3 different 90MB's UDMA Cards and the same result with each, I dont have any other cards here to try so unless my cards don't meet the UDMA 7 Standard that is needed for the 18 I am at a loss

Richard, I have some Lexar pro 600x 16 gig UDMAs which I use....do you want me to send one down for you to try....I'd like it back of course!!
