Hi

Normally when shooting in auto focus on my canon 5d. I have auto focus set to use just the middle af point square out of the 9. Have been trying to figure out which is the best one to use to that I get it in focus on peoples faces everytime.

If you have two people stood next to each other and you use the multiple Af points doesn't it sometimes focus in between the people.

Sorry I,m not very good at wording things properly hope this makes sense.

I'd recommend moving your focus button from half pressing the shutter (which is what you are doing now) to the button that would normally zoom out of your photos when reviewing them (below the white star) Then select the middle focus point and focus wherever then you can move the camera around to compose whilst having that point in focus

As long as you also realise your lens can't focus on 2 things as once as so to speak... both people must be in the same depth of field which on a 1.8 - 2.8 lens can be a challenge

Hope that helps a little...

A-DEP is the one feature missing from the 5D I'd personally find very useful. Ho-hum.

My advice is to get good at changing the AF point, quickly. I change mine A LOT, sometimes from one shot to the next, depending on what I'm doing. Occasionally I leave it on the centre and re-compose (also helps when spot-metering I find).

It becomes instinctive to quickly change the AF point whilst looking through the viewfinder. There isn't really an answer to your question other than getting good at changing it yourself.

On the 5D the centre focus point is by far the most sensetive and some have said accurate, you also have 6 hidden focus points around the centre point which a lot of people turn off, you can do that in custom functions, as these hidden points can aquire focus and take it away from the centre point. I personally hated the assist points and had them turned off.

You can focus and recompose using either the * button on the back (if its set up) or by half pressing the shutter button and recomposing, have a play see which you find the easiest.
