canon 5d

I was wondering if the canon 5d is a good camera? Im looking for a different camera with my previous being a 500d. advice is needed as I want to make sure its good before I pick one up. Is it classed as a pro camera? Thanks for any help offered

Are you talking about the original 5D? If so, it's a fantastic camera Image quality is superb, the body feels very solid and the viewfinder is huge (compared with the 500D). High ISO is great at ISO 1600 and it has the top LCD.

What you would dislike is it's sensor dust collection ability and low resolution rear LCD.

Yes, it's a good camera.

What do you want to shoot with it?

Yep, classed as pro, I use mine in conjunction with a 5DmkII. Usually I have a 70-200mm f2.8 on the 5D and it is a stunning combo.

I agree about the screen, after using the ones on my 5DmkII, 7D, 1DmkIII etc it is a pain when going to the 5D but I only ever take a quick look so nothing much to worry about. Dust is something I've never suffered with, I usually have to give the sensor a clean with an air blower 2 or 3 times a year.

The glass can make a huge difference as obviously the EF-S lenses that you potentially have with the 500D won't work on it.

Im not up on different lens quality but I read about needing L lenses.

You don't "need" L lenses A nice 50/1.4 or 85/1.8 is a good place to start for people

L glass isn't essential but it certainly helps. I use the Canon 85mm f1.8 quite a bit as well as my L glass on it and love those results.

Can I just ask why would lenses off the 500d not work? Is it because the 5d takes different sized lenses so they wouldn't fit or is it some other reason.

500D (EF-S) lenses only cover the image circle for an APS-C sized sensor so on the 5D's full frame sensor there would be severe vignetting. Full frame EF lenses will work fine on it though.

Also, due to differing construction of the EF-S lenses and the bigger mirror of the 5D, you run the risk of the mirror hitting the back of an EF-S lens, which may result in damage to the mirror.

An EF-S lens won't physically fit on the 5d*




*there are mods that can be done to make them fit, but why bother

Canon - EF lenses
Sigma - DG lenses (DC are the equivalent of EF-S lenses)
Tamron - Di lenses (confusingly, Di II are the equivalent of EF-S lenses).

As digitalfailure/Scarecrow say, you are likely to damage the 5D mirror mechanism if you try taking a picture with an EF-S lens attached...
