Having recently taken on board a 5d mk2 - I wondered if anyone here has purchased a separate microphone for use with the video feature - any good or bad choices out there? I've seen options from about £40 to £200 - and wondered if anyone has any recommendations from personal use?

... and me.

I have just listened to some tests of this mike - why do you prefer it to the Rode Stereo videomike which sounds much clearer?

didnt knew that MKE 400 was mono :gag:
and this Rode one looks nice :)

just seen test on youtube with magic lantern firmware loaded on to 5d2 and it looks good :)
Now have to find someone that used this firmware as well so I will be sure I wont brick my 5d2 :geek:

The pretty standard thing to do for _reallly_ good quality audio and decent connections etc is to use a zoom digital audio recorder iirc... it's got two decent (though not shotgun) mics built in for stereo, and 2 xlr ins for wireless packs or booms, and a live headphone out socket to plug into the 5d2 for syncing the audio in edit...

Depends what you're doing really...the above is good for small scale single shot dramas or whatever, however for more run and gun or less... controlled...stuff, the rode is pretty well reviewed, and decent shotgun mikes will set you back a fortune, and also poke you in the face whenever you try to get close to the screen (if using a loupe or something)

I'm pretty sure that this is the one that the HV20users bunch rate pretty highly... maybe check out http://www.thomann.de/gb/sennheiser_mke_400.htm too

Nope not ordered one yet - still umming and ahing.. I want a hot shoe mounted one.. although I did record a bit of HD video last night - I'm not sure the sound is up to much on the internal mic...

The internal mic is only mono - so even if it sounds 'ok' on the camera - it'll sound shocking on a 40" LCD!

I am looking at a stereo hot shoe mounted mic with a good wind shield - there are quite a few to choose from!!

Does anyone know if the hotshoe on a camcorder is the same as a hotshoe on a DSLR? It doesn't have to power anything just somewhere for it to mount

hi guys, did any of you buy an external mic yet?

just got a 7D so be interested to find out your opinions on external mics

I dont need one until June/July :)
