Canon 5dc with shutter release issue???

So I have a 5dc and a 1d mk2. I have been using my china copy TC-80N3 timer remote on my 1d for star trails.
I have just plugged it into my 5d and although it will focus the lens it won't fire the shutter. I have retested it in the 1d and as soon as I plug it in and hit the button it fires.
It won't do it in the 5d though.

Am I missing something? It's been a long day so might might of missed something.

You can test the release part of the connection by popping the lens into MF....this eliminates the need for focus confirm.

Once the focus confirm is eliminated then it is very likely to be a simple case of a bad contact....can you see all three pins in the camera's N3 socket?

Have to concur with Bob, swap my remote between 5D MkI - MkII without a problem and from memory there is nothing in the menu that needs enabling

Perhaps resetting the 5D back to factory default is worth a try just in case something is stopping the shutter firing.
 
That's me defeated then Mark.

A brief explanation of how the remote release works (from the body's point of view). The three pins in the N3 connector are; voltage, focus command and release command. If the lens is reporting being in AF mode then the body needs to see the voltage switched back on the focus command followed by lens focus confirm and then the voltage switched onto the release command. If the lens is reporting MF then switching the voltage to the release command first will work.

I guess that you can test the N3 socket by carefully poking something conductive into the socket (the pins are fragile at best so be careful) whilst having the lens in MF (to reduce the need to sequence the contacts correctly).

the last time i made a remote lead up one of the pins will be common and the other 2 are focus and shutter release

it's been a while since i made a lead up but from memory the focus pin and shutter release pin connect to the common pin
focus pin to common allows the camera to focus only but when all 3 pins are shorted together the camera will try to focus then fire
if my memory is correct the shutter release pin connected to common without the focus pin will still try to focus then fire and if you are using manual focus will just fire
the focus pin connected to common in manual focus does nothing

the common pin is ground

it might be a case of the plug on the remote switch not making proper contact with the 3 pins in the camera

looking at the socket on the camera the pins are arranged in an upside down triangle the bottom pin is common ( ground ) the top left pin is focus and the top right pin is shutter release

if your brave enough you could put the camera in manual with manual focus and try shorting the top right pin and the bottom common pin together with a small flat screwdriver to see if the shutter will fire
be careful not to bend the pins if you try this you shouldn't need a lot pf pressure to make a contact between the pins

you won't be doing anything different to what the shutter release switch does there's very little chance of doing harm to the camera unless you do something wrong which is unlikely as the common pin is just ground which is the body of the camera

at least it will let you know if it's a camera problem or a lead problem

if you try this i'm not responsible if something goes horribly wrong i know it works as i checked it on my own camera before typing this to make sure

So I tried the above and nothing.

Seems strange it works on the 1d and yet only focus's on 5d.
 
So the 5d will focus on trigger and with a screwdriver touching both contacts. But won't fire with trigger or screw driver. :(

is that a question i'm not really following you
are you saying the camera is focusing when you short the trigger ( top right pin ) and common together but will not fire or the camera focuses when either of the top 2 contacts are connected to common but does not fire ? and will not fire with remote trigger or with top right and common connected shorted together ( lens in manual focus )

if what you have tried is the same as i am describing it and you cannot get the shutter to fire ( camera set to manual ) then it does sound like the fault is with the camera
 
It's a statement.

The camera focus's with trigger and with screwdriver.
But won't fire with either trigger or screwdriver.
 
I suspect repair and replacement are very close to the same cost...except that replacement will leave you with a spare body for regular shutter usage.
