edit, mk2 not mk4 :p

if I put my camera into M and then set the ISO to auto it stays at 400 even when its a super bright day which makes the exposure totally over exposed instead of choosing 100.

Im sure this wasnt always the wayor am I missing something?

I just checked the manual again and found it. Its set to 400 as standard, which is strange since 400 is such a strange number to set it to. ALthough the noise isnt too much of an issue with the 5d

I don't know much about Canon's default settings, but ISO400 in the old film days was considered 'general use' - ISO100 was too difficult when the light wasn't great, ISO200 still didn't give enough flexibility when it got a bit darker so ISO400 was the jack of all trades sensitivity.
