Canon 600D or 700D

The time has come to upgrade my ever reliable 450D and I have looked at the 600D and 700D which both look excellent and just what I am looking for - but I am finding it hard to choose between the two - any people out there care of offer comments on them both and offer their experiences before I take the plunge .... ???
 
I own a 600D but if I were in your position I would choose the 700D for the touchscreen and the support for STM lenses. The new 760D doesn't look too bad either.
 
I would personally go for the 700d for the touchscreen also :-)
 
Ask yourself if you are going to use the touchscreen and what is the chance of buying an STM lens? I would personally buy the 600D and buy a lens for the difference in the price.
 
I'm puzzled, the STM lenses work perfectly on my 600D, cant see how the 700D would use them differently?

Hi Martin

What are you finding (if anything) that the 450D won't do / is holding you back - this could be the helping factor in deciding what to upgrade to...

Is the 600 / 700D enough of an upgrade though - have you thought about the 60 / 70D as an option ?

Personally, I would decide what you want the new body to do, make a list and then look at the various bodies and decide which would be the better bet.

Also worth remembering that the 60 / 70D etc are a larger body, so could be better fit in your hands
 
cheers @andyred and the 70D does look a great piece of kit, but to be honest, the 700D is really good for me and what I am looking for at this point, the additional WiFi options and remote control features aren't something I would use that much, so the 700D will work best for me I think going forward.

That's the decision made easier when you do know what you do / don't want the body to do.

Don't forget about the 750 and 760D - not sure what the improvements are with them.

You just need to make sure you aren't upgrading for the sake of it and settling for something that potentially you might outgrow / want to upgrade again in 6 -12 months
 
I have the 70D and it is a fantastic upgrade from my 50D which was a great servant.

I am using a 750D alongside it and, strangely, enjoying it more than rhe 70D. It was an impulse buy but as I had a load of Amazon vouchers built up, there was also (till 13 Jan) a winter double cash back of £100 (same for 700D and 760D) so I actually only had to put £170 to get the body only pack.

The 750D just feels good in the hand and seems 'quick' in use. I was out with it this morning alongside the 70D. My son and I swapped between the 2 bodies and lenses. (EF-S 17-85 and Tamron 18-200) and, on the day, the 750D was the prefereed choice.

It would be worthwhile getting a feel of the 700D, 750D and 70D but the bottom line is budget and longetivity. It is a long time since I bought 'new' and now 2 new ones in 15 months.

If you get a chance to take your 450D along to try out the 'feel' of a newer body then it is to be recommended. My sister loves her 550D and will not change it for anything.

Like any purchase, do you really need to replace 'old faithful'

My excuse is I also collect cameras, so my den is like a second hand shop! The latest buys have seen me sell on a few bodies for the first time in a while but it was hard.

Maybe I'm not as weird as I thought, the 600D was my preferred choice over the 60D.
I was fortunate to borrow each for a week to try out and the 600D won, the handling and operation just seemed right for me, but coming from an ancient 300D both were a bit of a revelation :)
3 years later and I'm still happy with it, though it has been partnered by an EOS-M to relieve some of the pressure on the shutter count, it was getting a bit high. Only trouble is that now I wish the 600D had the touch screen, never thought I would find that feature so useful. Next time it will probably be another xxxD, just works right for me.

I have an EOS M too. (Essentially a 600/650D without the mirror box). It was my fst choice pocket camera till I got a Sony HX60.

I like the Canon Connect IPad app and will be using that onanother baby shoot tomorrow with the 750D.

The wifi functionality is a game changer for the 70D/750D duo I now use.

Yes the EOS-M is a surprising little powerhouse, I love that I can go out easily with 2 bodies and one set of lenses for a days shooting.
Though I do use it a lot of the time, I wouldn't be without a DSLR for action or long lens shots.
There is a lot to be said for being content with your gear, rather than chasing after the latest and greatest all the time.
Just as well really as I cant afford to change every few months ;)
 
Waiting on delivery now of the new 700D body so really excited about the coming weekend and I have to admit I also purchased a Canon 40mm f2.8 lens too .. well you can't have enough lenses can you :)
 
Well then in a surprise development, there was first a let down when I received contact today that the 700D was not actually available as shown, and wouldn't be arriving ...... but then a nice little tempter of a very good deal on a 70D instead which was immediately available .... it's more than I was planning on spending, but I recognise a great deal when I see one, so that's me even giddier now ..... :)

The 70D is in a different class to the 700D and a great piece of quality. I think you will be very happy.88

As said previously, I have the 70D and 750D. I love the 70D but the 750D has surprised me all the same. I tried the 750D out with the 50mm f/1.8 STM doing some video. Very nice. But the same lens seems better on tbe 70D for stills over the 750D.

I am puzzling over Canon's strategy with the 750D/760D bodies against the 70D. (Especially the 760D). A future 80D will need to have all the 70 and 760 bits and more. My usual buying strategy will see me with my current new kit for a long time into my retirement, irrespective of what comes next to market.
 
imho it depends if you want to do video or not if you do get the newer one if not save a few quid and get the 600d ...... the 600d does video imo the 700d is more geared with the touchscreen though

So far my trial with the video on the 750D has provwd interesting. I was not quite au fait with the hybrid sensor, but, seemingly it is 'tuned' to make the most of STM lenses used for video. I tried it with the 50mm STM and it worked as expected. The AF was imperceptible but as a 'prime' it was not a real test. Then put my son's 18-135 IS on the camera and still fine though some 'judder' whilst zooming as it recorded. Finally swapped to my 18-135 STM. Very smooth AF and no 'judder'. I tend not to do video but was impressed. Hope to get out some time over the next few days to try some more video. More reading up on the 'hybrid' sensor too.

Welcome to the new age of the EOSxx.

I take it that you are blown away by your new 70D? I went from the 50D to a 70D and had much the same reaction (even though the 50D was and still is a great camera).

Have fun! Don't forget to try out the Canon Connect Android/iOS app.

In the end I got the 70D body and I also got a 40mm f2.8 lens and the combination is stunning .... I went across to the local churchyard yesterday (I nearly melted, as I am not religious in any shape or form, but oddly enough I love church architecture, but thats another subject) anyway here are some of the images I shot yesterday - processing aside as you either love or hate HDR tendencies I was pleased with the outcome.

Glad you got a chance to get out. The 40mm pancake is a great lens. I got one off the forum quite a while back and it goes everywhere with me. It is on my EOS 5 film body at the moment. I am hoping to get to Avon Gorge with it early this afternoon.
 
It is an amazing lens, I got out again yesterday to take some shots at the local cyclocross event ... so pleased with the outcome ....
