Canon 600D or wait?

Hi.

I'm in the market for a new DSLR for mainly video but I will also use it for photography aswell. Need one for at least the start of June.

I'm so close to buying the 600D but I know its close for the 650D to come out. I know nobody knows for sure, but for anyone who has been keeping up with whats hapened with previous models have they roughly been the same price?

I can get the Japanese model of the 600D for £450 w/kit lens from digital rev which seems a really good price seeing as Amazon sell the 600D for £580.

I had the same dilemma back last Feb....do I get the 600D now or wait for the 650D thinking it's release would be quite soon.....well I'd still be waiting now and would have lost a load of good photo opportunities so glad at the time I took the plunge and went for the 600D

No sure what the 650D will offer over over the 600D though...guess more megapixels and mayby the DIGIC 5 processor

I've read rumours of it fixing moire like on the 5Dmk3 and also having a good autofocus option in video mode.

Is that £450 your budget or do you have some leeway?

We have a few 60Ds at work that produce great video looking at the tech specs, it's the same system in the 600D. The AF on the 60D seems adequate and hooked up to a directional mic, the sound is fine too. Think it's 30/25/24fps at 1080 and 60/50fps at 720 so plenty of options.

Not sure what the policy is with ordering from Digital Rev in terms of import duty - they have their own section on TP if it helps.

What about the Nikon D3200? You have a Nikon already so makes sense and the specs look good, especially the 24mp sensor if that's your kind of thing......

How much video v photography. I've had this argument before and although canon / nikon are pandering to the P&S masses moving to DSLRs the video capabilities of the DSLR are poor compared to a dedicated HD video camera.

If you mainly want to photograph things and take the occasional video then its a good compromise, but if you're fundamentally using it to shoot video, buy a dedicated HD video camera with stills capabilities

If I was to choose a camera body with HD capabilities, you get what you pay for, my choice would be the canon 5D MK III.

You have also got to remember to factor in some decent lenses to get the best from the set up as well, and they ain't cheap either.

Hmm, I'll be doing both to be fair. The SLR will produce better video than a dedicated HD video camera would shoot stills. I am definetely going to be buying a SLR, I like the look it gives on films plus I don't have the money to buy a dedicated HD camcorder yet!

Yeah, regarding the D3200 I think it actually costs more than the 600D and it doesnt have a swivel screen which is important for me.

If your priority is vid you surely should look at the Panasonic GH2. There are hacks available and although vid isn't my thing at all from reading up on it this seems to be the way to go for vid shooters as from what I've read it punches way above it's weight and is better than the 5DII.

Maybe you could do a little Googling and read up on the subject.

If your thinking of the 600D for video then maybe worth having a look at Magic Latern

Magic Lantern is an enhancement atop of Canon's firmware that frees your Canon DSLR, allowing you to use many useful features. Initially developed for filmmakers

If video is very important, and you want to use the camera as a video camera, with good Auto Focus, then you may want to go the Sony SLT or Compact System Camera route. Both those types of camera can AF to a reasonable level when using the video. Most DSLRs are not too good, yet, when using the video option. The top of the range DSLRs have been aimed at Professionals who would use manual focusing, and so the AF hasn't been a priority, but even if it was, it has been difficult to do as a new AF technology has to be incorporated to a very high level, and so far the DSLRs haven't done that imho.

Maybe the Sony A57 is one to consider, because that has been designed to focus when using the video. And that camera because that has a tilt LCD screen which the OP wants.

can't fault my 600d with Magic lantern impressive easy to use excellent camera and the flipy out twidly screen is just ace for video and play back
just bought a 7d still playing with it so may sell the 600d undecided at the minute
keep an eye out in the for sale section

I was surprised to see the event photographer on a recent motorsport rally videoing using a 550D with a Tamron 18-270 lens - exactly the same kit as I have. He has moved on from dedicated semi-pro video gear. He's installed Magic Lantern, and I noticed that he did have a big grip attached, as I guess the batteries get used up pretty quickly.

Depends how important the video option is to you. :shrug:

I don't do video, but if I did, I'd want it as easy as possible. And I'd like it to auto focus quickly, while I was videoing.
