Hi all hope you can help a bit
I have a Canon 600D with extras but thinking of selling the lot for a Canon 5D mk1 or Mk2 but this is the problem. On paper the 5D mk1 is not better than the 600D apart from full frame and the body but due to the age will be a lot more used (clicks). So will the Mk2 be a better option, yes I know it depends on what I use it for. I would love to get into more portrait and full body shots but a few fast shots when I teach Jiu Jitsu every blue moon. Any advice would be very helpful.

Well, I'll help where I can - I have owned the 5D and a 500D over the years, sadly I cannot comment on the 5DII, however I understand the centre AF point to be okay, much as it was on the 5D.

Things to bear in mind though - firstly switching to FF from crop brings a couple of issues.


  1. The field of view on a crop is x1.6, so if you've a 100mm you're actually used to 160mm, so as you can imagine all the ranges you're used to will be wrong for a while till you adjust.
  2. You'll need EF lenses, now you may already be set for that but the EF-S lenses won't work properly any more - this is the most expensive part of moving to FF.
Other issues you may face is all those bells and whistles you're used to will be gone - check models for specifics on this part.
Also you have a flip out screen and much as I love my 5D3 I really miss the flip out screen - it was a Godsend for low angle shots.


So theres a starter for you - if at all possible track down someone with a full frame and have a play - hopefully you'll have a camera club near you often people are very helpful and may let you try your own lenses to see how the ranges work for you, also you'll get an idea what the images will be like because one of the other things about FF users is due to the EF lens restriction they tend to have better lenses, not to be snobs, but because they're stuck with them!
 
I myself have just moved to a 5D mk1, couldn't be happier. This was from a 500D also. Yes I have lost things like live view, higher megapixels, newer tech, but in iq alone that to me has topped the cherry. The images I get just seem to be way better quality wise.

I would recommend it but everyone is different, it all depends on your needs. Why is the 600 not good enough for you, lack of features? High ISO requirements? Etx, just think do you need to and why first just encased you don't get what you want after upgrading.
 
I went from D3100 to 5D2, worth every penny and every second of brand switching hassle.

These full frame cameras produce photos with dreamly quality that can't be produces on crop. Then there's also the extra clarity you gain from having less densely packed pixels.

Re Mark 1 or 2, it depends entirely on whether you think you need mk2's video features and higher pixel counts. Mark 1 is still a brilliant camera and from what I hear, it produces even dreamier photos than mk2.

the 600D is good enough but its not weather proof LOL
and i like the sound of a full frame so a 50mm is 50 and a 85 is a 85 Etc
i have never used the tilt on the screen
I have looked at the 7D also
TBH if i can get a Mk2 for a good price or px my 600 this will be the only way
 
Don't put a massive emphasis on getting a 5d MK2. You don't need weatherproofing for indoor portraits, also, if you sell everything to get one then you would have no money left for a decent lens.
I would look for a low shutter count 5d.

There we go then, that's a real good start :) basically that's what I was told to think about when I started looking for a change.

Good stuff, well I went from my 500D, Tamron 17-50, 50 1.8, Sigma 30 1.4 and Sigma 10-20 for my 5Dc and a 24-105L. A huge change to 1 lens but in my view... perfect decision :D

I would expect 5D to totally trash 600D in a straight comparison. We are comparing entry level to older semi pro body used for advertising prints, magazine publications etc. Some knowledge is required though to make the best use of one, so for that reason, you may as well leave mk2 alone till a bit later.
 
1. Go to a shop

2. Try a 5D mk II (if still available) or a 5d mk III. Rent one for a day if possible.

3. Have fun.

4. Do you like the images?
No! -> don't buy a 5D
Yes! -> Do you need the extra features of a mk II or mk III? ( eg. Auto ISO, more C-buttons, video,...) then buy mk II or MK III
If you don't need them, buy a classic and invest in EF-lens(es).

I went from 450d to 5d via 50d. My experience was. 50d outperforms 450d with regard to features, not image quality. 5d outperforms both with regard to IQ but not features. Am very, very, very happy with 5D. Can live without features. Get to play with (semi-)pro body at reasonable price (new 3500€ but second hand now around 500-600€!, the price of a new entry level body or used xx-D).

I've not long changed from a 40D to a 5D and love it to bits. Only thing I miss is live view as I would have used it for focusing manually doing night long exposure, aside from that its spot on. I was fortunate to find a late model with very low use and a canon receipt for a service each year from new, look about and there are some good ones about for very humble money. I would go as far as saying it turns out as much detail as my Mamiya RB67 does with velvia 50 or Reala100

errrrr the mk3 is a totally different camera, in a different [higher] league. Thus mk3 should not be a reason to buy mk1 or mk2
 
Many thanks with all your help I think i will go for a 5D mk II so the next thing it to try to sell my 600D and a grip
or PX them
