Hi All,

I have a canon 50d which I use a sigma ef-500 dg super external flash with. It works fine with no issues, the camrea menu work fine with it. The flash works as it should in E-TTL mode.

My freind has just picked up a new Canon 60d and wanted to try my flash but his camara can not work with it. It states its switched off and will not fire the flash for love nor money in any camrea mode. It will not allow you to adjust the flash menus either.

The pop up flash works fine on the 60d, and when the external flash is fittted it does not try and fire the pop up.

Any thoughts? I can not think of any reason why it would not be compatible :thinking:

Manual states the 60d will work with old speed lights in TTL mode I can not even manage that.

What am I doing wrong???

There may be a compatability issue with the new 60D. Third party guns are reverse-engineered and Canon are known to change a few things with new camera models.

Contact Sigma and they may be able to fix it for you with a firmware upgrade.
 
Not sure this is any help, but I haven't had any problems with my Sunpak PZ40X on the 60D.

will do, I guess they will say the newer 530 works ok but we will see.

Bit strange as it works with the 50d, 550d, 7d so I would have thought it would be fine but maybe not.
 
Can you try it with a different external flash, preferably a recent Canon one? It's possible it's the body rather than the flash.

Have you tried the Sigma flash in manual? I'd expect that to work. If it doesn't you could try taping over all the contacts apart from the centre one on the unit as then it should at least fire albeit without any power control.
 
yes I will try it with my new 580ex Mkii after xmas as its under the tree.

No I could not even get it to fire in Manual mode.

I will try taping the contacts and see what happens.

I think I will try my freinds body with my new canon 580ex MkII 1st and see what happens. To try and rule out a body fault.

Look like good customer service from Sigma :clap:
 
I have had similar problems with EOS60D - contacted Sigma with full details of model number and serial number - from other forums it appears that model must be EF-500 DG SUPER EO-ETTL II (with "EO" in a box).

They have said it can be upgraded (rechipped).

If I can prove I am the original purchaser (with receipt) then the rechip is free (only have to pay £5 for return postage). If not original owner, then cost is £37.99.

2-3 weeks lead time.

I have despatched mine to their service centre - shall await outcome.

Yes my flash is EF-500 DG super EO in box. serial 6012805

Not sure I would be able to locate a receipt after all this time might be worth a hunt around.

Wow - had a letter on Friday (7th) to confirm receipt of unit at service centre, and today (10th) the flash came back (via UPS).

Tested it on my camera and it now works fine.

Fantastic service from Sigma - 5 days including transit both ways and a Sunday.

For info - I could not find actual receipt, but sent a copy of my online order confirmation email.
