Canon 60D focusing point problem and 5 days out of warranty.

Whilst out taking photos at a wildlife park my Canon 60D suddenly developed major focusing issues. It will only focus on the point to the very right hand side of the diamond pattern of 9 points. Even if I select centre point only it will still only try and use the single point at the outside. Has anyone else come across this problem as I cant seem to rectify it. Also I have checked my ebay purchase history and it was bought on the 27th Dec 2013 so is 5 days out of warranty even if I could claim as i'm not sure its a UK model.:(
Really hope to hear good news as i'm going to Whipsnade zoo on sunday and would love to know a quick fix if there is one.:help:
 
Probably already tried this but, and also assuming it's the same on all your lenses, have you done a factory reset.

Also might be worth looking to see if you have the latest firmware as a corrupt firmware file might also be to blame but they don't usually alow a reload of the same version only an update, so if there is an update you might be in luck.

As to the out of warranty bit, if it is a UK model it might be worth checking this with trading standards but a few years ago I had a TV that died after 13 months of use and the repair agent said it was beyond economic repair. After speaking to my local trading standards I contacted the TV makers UK supplier and asked them how long they claim is the expected life expectancy as I don't accept 13 months is acceptable if that all they claim their products will last, they very quickly accepted the TV back and repaired it free of charge.

Apparently there is something in the sale of goods act which say that goods should not only last their warranty period but also have a reasonable life as well, so if something breaks just out of warranty you could still have a case to get it repaired by the supplier.

This was afew years ago so it might have changed by now, but a call to your local trading standards will advise you if it is and how best to approach Canon

Unless it's not an EEC Camera then it's down to you.

I'd try Canon @ Elstree and see if they can offer you any help / support. This may depend on where the camera was from, but certainly worth an ask.

Have you tried removing the battery and the small button battery and see if this resets everything ???

Hope you manage to get it sorted out
 
Thanks for the swift reply Paul-H and andyred. I have only got my basic instruction manual with me,as I am staying away from home for a few days. And there is no mention on how to do a factory reset,and I cant find the button battery that's also been mentioned.:(
Do I need 1 of the discs that came with the camera.
And yes the problem persists with all 3 lenses that I have with me,so it definitely isn't a lens issue.
 
Factory Reset:

Put the Camera in Manual Mode
Press the Menu button
Scroll over to the third subsection of the third set of menu options.
Scroll down to the Clear all Camera Settings option by using the quick control dial
Click the Set button. Scroll over to the OK button and click Set button again.
When the factory reset has been completed, pull out the battery
Look in the battery compartment, and you’ll see a little slider you can pull it.
Behind this slider are the backup-battery hidden. Take this battery out for at least an hour, replace the backup-battery, and the “normal” battery.

Warning! When you execute “Factory Reset”, all stored settings will be erased and returned to the factory settings. Do not use this function unless you are certain that you want to do this.
 
Canon tend to be quite good with faulty items just out of warranty. If it does turn out to be a fault contact them immediately and they will likely cover the repair.

Unless it is a grey import which given the ebay origin it probably is then they will only touch it for cold hard cash. The risk we all take with imports!
 
Well thanks for everyones advise. I cleared the camera settings twice as advised by chris,removed the main battery but cant find any sort of slider to pull out. But it does seem to have worked. It now picks up on all focus points instead of just the far right hand side one as earlier.
It wont just focus using the centre point only,but maybe its just the fact i'm indoors in the relative darkness.
Thanks again guys and girls for words of advise. Hopefully I can get out this weekend and check its fully working again.:)
