canon 60mm vs 85mm, opinions for portraits

I think which ever one you choose you will be pleased with. I really wish I had had a dSLR when my son was a newborn. I recieved my first dSLR last August as a present and am now well and truely addicted. It is a waaaaaay to expensive hobby though! I am n ow saving for a telephoto and contemplating the Tamron 70-300 USD VC :)

With a 60mm lens you have a limited working distance for close ups/macros but for my purposes it is fine.

I have decided to go for the 85mm. I was just wondering has anyone used a cheap lens hood from the likes of ebay?

Yes. Be a bit careful with this, as opposed to the standard screw-on type the hood the 85mm uses is one of the more complicated ones where you press a couple of points on the side of it to withdraw some lugs, slide it over the top of the lens and then release the lugs. So the hood needs to be at least semi decently made, but the cheap one I got from ebay was rubbish, the lugs didn't withdraw properly and then at least one snapped off.

I am now the owner of the canon 60 macro 2.8. Very pleased with the lens. A bit slow if it hints for focus, but as mentioned previously the flash helps eliminate hunting in low light.
