Canon 650D ISO query

I think I might be able to answer my own question now, but would appreciate any comments.

To me setting an Auto ISO maximum I would expect that to be the automatic level at its highest requirement ie 800 on this example.

Yet in AV mode, I noticed the ISO was showing as 3200, so I must have manually set that at some point previously.

To prove this I put the Auto ISO menu setting at 800, but manually in AV mode set 1600.

Switched camera off then back on - sure enough the photo was being taken at ISO 1600 which suggests if a higher value had previously been set manually in the setting then the Auto ISO function does not work.

Is this a flaw in the software do you think ?
 
No, you've told it you want a specific iso, set the camera to auto iso and it will bounce around whatever iso is necessary upto iso 800

See my second note. To check this further I went into some of the other Creative Zone modes, and the ISO manually set at 3200 still prevailed from previous even though camera had been switched off.

As a final check I went into the totally automated mode (green marker on selector) and sure enough the 3200 still showed
 
Thats because you've told the camera what iso setting you want, turning the camera off doesnt forget your settings, it remembers your last settings so you can start shooting again straight away, and it will carry over whether you select, av priority, tv, manual or auto, what you need to do is press your iso button (sorry not familiar with 650d so i'll have to be fairly vague) and scroll across to auto iso, select that option, pop the camera back in av priority and try to take a shot, now you should find the camera wont go above iso 800, and will stay in auto iso even in auto mode

Thanks for that - scrolling across I see a setting of A, which I presume to be the auto so that is now selected again.

I think its one of those situations where you can see logic behind both scenarios - you benefit from an adjustment to the speed on a particular session.

But if at a much later date you dont remember to reset the iso button setting to the auto bit, then the menu doesnt kick in.

No problem, i often forget myself,
on my 5d i can set auto which will go from 100 - 25600 (iirc)
but i can select manually (L) which is iso 50, i've often used that on a really bright day then come back to the camera and wondering why the shots are under exposing till it hits me :lol:
