Hi all

I'm a newbie here and looking for advice on Lenses.

Hopefully this is the correct section to post.

I'm looking for recommendations for the following types of photography

Night (star trails/scenery)

Motorsport - I do track days, motorbikes and cars and between sessions I'd like to have a go at taking some action shots. I have done a few but looking for a faster lens as the canon 50-250 IS lens didn't seem to capture the pictures too well, albeit it maybe me :bonk:

Portrait - is the EFS 18-55 kit lens good enough?

Aviation/terrain - I am in a position to see a lot of aircraft at altitude and at airports so looking for a good stable lens


So question is........ Is there one lens that can do all the above or do I Ned a series of lenses?

Please can recommend lens/lenses as I am looking to purchase what I need

I do not wish to 'hire' them to try, as I work away for 4-8 weeks at a time so may work out expensive.

I look forward to your recommendations and advice

As for lens it comes down to a big factor... How much do you want to spend!

Ideally you'd want 300 to 400 for Motorsport, specially if you're at places like silverstone and for quality a 'L' lens.... You see it's easy for me to say as I'm spending your money :lol:

I know what you mean about the 50-250 as used it earlier at silverstone and the shots I got were extremely poor but then again that could be well be my poor skills.

I quite like the kit lens and get some half decent stuff with it though I always shoot in raw and tweak in photoshop
 
There isn't really a one lens for everything.

The 55-250IS is actually not too bad for a budget lens for motorsport - there is a knack but it comes with practice - its probably the best new option for under £ 200. If you want a better lens then you need to invest in something high quality covering the 300 to 400mm range.

For star trails you'll probably want a wide angle lens as well as remote shutter release and tripod.

Aviation - the motorsport lens can do this.

Portraits - a fast prime or a zoom covering the 50-100 range.

If budget was not a big issue but you didn't want to spend the family inheritance what might you suggest?

I know jessops do 0% and with a good deposit prices become a little more manageable.

300-400 lens, model, price,
Wide angle, model price
