Canon 6D 70-200 f2.8L mkii and 2x extender or a 70-200 f2.8L on a canon 550d crop

Hi all, I apologise in advance if this has already been reviewed, but I have gone to the canon 6d from a 550d, so no longer have the extra reach from the crop factor, I was going to get shut of the 550d and get a 2 x extender, I like to shoot sport and was wondering if the image quality would suffer more using a 2 x extender than just keeping the 550d and putting the lens on that, also it would save me £400. so basically is the 550d going to produce better images than the 6d with a 2x extender on, thanks a lot.

Isn't the trade off a bit more complex? Won't you lose a stop of light from putting the extender on, as well as losing a little sharpness?
 
Not sure about image quality Lee, but with the 2x extender you will loose 2 stops, so it will become effectively 140 - 400 F5.6. Having said that, the 6D will handle higher ISO better, so that might not be such a big problem anyway?
 
You will lose two stops with the x2 which still gives you a constant f5.6 though. Is sport all you shoot or did you buy the 6D with something specific in mind?

hi Gary, I like to shoot portraits of the kids and family too, and a bit of macro :),in fact thinking about it I just like photography, if I had the extra cash I would of gone for the 5diii but as its only a hobby to me and not a living I couldn't really afford the extra money, I did think about the 70d but that would of just been for the sport side of things so I thought maybe the 6d would of been better in the other areas such as portrait.

Then if you can afford to keep them both for a while I would. Then you can see how good the 6D is at sports. My own feeling is that a 1.4 would be a better bet than a x2.

Just to illustrate the point about shooting both bodies before making a decision. I bought a 5D3 and after using it was so impressed I put my 1D MkIV up for sale thinking that the 5D would do it all, which to be fair it could. The sale fell through on the MkIV and I started to use it a bit more. Now I'm glad it didn't sell as it has its place for when I need a bit more reach. You may find that you feel the same about your 550D.

your right, I need to test them both I suppose, I was hoping someone would say "oh you will get better results with 6d and 2 x extender" but things never seem that clean cut do they,:bonk: cheers anyway guys :thumbs:
 
I use a Canon MkIII 2x extender on my 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII on my 70D for wildlife and aircraft shots and the IQ I can get is very good IMO. I use a Sigma 150-500 OS on my 5D3 but I obviously get more reach with the 70D with extender and lens. A constant f5.6 isn't too hard to manage with the ISO ability of the 6D to get fast enough shutter speeds with good IQ. It's even better when stopped down to f8 as well, I got this pic of the bird as a Jpeg and has had no other PP apart from a crop.

well Stuart, i can honestly say i don't think there is anything wrong with the quality of that picture, great stuff, thanks for that input pal :thumbs:
