I've got the f2.8 non IS and it's sharp as hell wide open at any focal length.....

I'm sure you know this already, but the "4 stops" of IS only helps with camera shake....it's does nothing at all for shutter speed which obviously doesn't help with subject movement in low light :shake:

Don't think about it any further, PM Kerso on here for a price, unless they have gone up a lot since the begining of the year you should be able to get the 70-200 f4IS L and a 1.4 extender for just over £1k (say it fast - not so bad).

I have to say I am very happy with mine, much to my wifes pleasure as she was getting a bit fed up with me buying camera gear and never being toally happy with it.

I have used the phrase "worth every penny" a few times, and it's a lot of pennies

Have a look at my gallery at the horse pictures, http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&page=2&ppuser=9611the IS is awesome.

And THIS image and the two crops of the eyes.

I own a 70-200L IS f4 and it's a cracking lens.
I've read on here and other placed that it is often said that the IS F4 version is the sharpest in the range.
As I've never used the others I can't comment but this is a very good lens.

I have the 70-200 f4 L IS, and it's my favourite lens. Somehow the images it produces just look fantastic. And it's razor sharp. Get one!

If you don't need the IS, then the 70-200mm f4 (non IS) version also a worthy contender, optical quality is spot on, (even with a 1.4x TC), so I wouldn't take these optical test as set in stone, yes the 70-200mm f4 IS is a good lens, but have been happy with my f4 and f2.8 IS versions when it comes to aviation and motorsport photography and heard good things about the f2.8 IS MKII, but that lens is way too over priced.

f4 is lighter and slimmer than the f2.8 too. Should save a ligament if you don't need the extra stops.

I've got the f4 IS and can recommend it without hesitation. With a 1.4x it's a wonderful thing too.

I also am the happy owner of the 70-200 F4 IS and a 1.4 TC, Fantastic lens and fantastic and a bit longer with the TC bolted on. Just go for it, there is no way you will regret it and you'll only be thinking "what if" if you go for anything else!!!
