Oh b****r.
I purchased a secondhand 70-200 L just before Xmas and fully tested it and everything was good and it looked much loved.
I haven't had much opportunity to shoot with it since Christmas but used it at the weekend and it worked fine but then the AF stopped working. Turned camera off and on and then everything worked OK. Thought nothing more of it.
Then last night was using it again when the AF stopped again and the aperture number on the camera went from f4 to 00. I then pressed the shutter button and got Error 001 Camera and lens are not communicating check the contacts.
Or something to that effect.

I have cleaned the contacts and used a fully charged battery but still get the same issue. Anyone got any suggestions before I ship it off to Canon for repair?

Yes other lenses are working fine.
There does seem to be some play in the mount 1-2 mm rotation when the lens is mounted but I think I have seen somewhere that this is normal.
Does anyone have any idea of the repair rates at CPS Elstree as I fear I will be making a visit shortly:shake:

Best advice is to give them a bell and they will be able to give you an idea - they may do a specific all in one price for lenses as they do for bodies.

Have you been able to try the lens on another body ??

Did you buy it from a dealer, if so I'd go back and start spouting fit-for-purpose/sale-of-godds act etc and see of you get any joy.
Credit card purchase? Ditto.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I havent tried it on another body as I dont have access to another one easily.
All other lenses are functioning fine on the body It is just the 70-200 that has an issue.
I bought it off someone on this forum, it was tested and sold as seen. So no come back and I am convinced this is a new fault and the previous owner did not sell it to me knowing there was an issue. I guess it is just one of those things.

I will contact Canon and see what they say.:(

If it was insured and you'd dropped/knocked it I guess the insurance Co would have to foot the bill, if you had "all risks", you havent dropped it have you?

Just got off the phone to canon and they operate a fixed cost repair of £130 +VAT:'(

The guy on the phone said to try a pencil eraser on the contacts I will give it another go but dont hold out much hope.

I've heard of this working, so fingers crossed

Cleaning the contacts again didnt work so a trip to Elstree planed.
Interestingly the chap I bought it off had the lens cleaned and calibrated at Elstree a few months before I bought it so it currently is in warranty for the previous work. I mentioned this and said that if it is a poor/ loose connection would this be covered they said yes. I then gave my details and fact that it had changed hands became apparent they then said that warranties are not transferable.:bang:
I will take it up with them when I drop then lens off. I am not too bothered because I think the problem is more serious than a loose connection but it would be nice to think that they would have honoured the warranty on the previous work instead of quoting the small print :rules:

Very few warranties are transferable in my experience.
Bit late now but the previous owner could have helped out by saying he still owned it.
