Canon 70-200 f2.8 non IS vs 70-200 f4 IS

Hi all,

Im considering getting a 70-200 L lens second hand. Its for motorsport.

Ive seen a few for sale but my budget only allows for a non IS f2.8 or the constant f4 with IS.

So how important is IS? im tempted by the contstant f4 with IS but would like to hear your opinions

IS is massively important for what you want I believe. I have the F4 and find mine fast enough but you may need the extra aperture leeway. You are trapped between a rock and a hard place in a really awesome kind of way.
 
IS is of nearly no use for Motorsports in my experience. The extra 2 stops however makes quite a difference in both terms of DOF and low light performance should you shoot any night races.

As dunganick says, the IS is really not much use at the fast shutter speeds you need for any kind of action photography. However one thing to bear in mind is that the f/4 is quite a bit lighter so you're more likely to hand hold and get decent shots. I've got an f/4 and personally wouldn't swap it for the non-IS f/2.8. Just remember that the IS on this lens is also the old style mode 1/mode 2 for static/moving targets, so do remember to put in into mode 2 if you get it and use the IS for motorsports.
